De klokketonen in short
The Chimes follows Toby Veck, a poor ticket porter who loves the bells above his church. On the last day of the old year, powerful men tell him and his daughter Meg that the poor have no right to marry, to eat, or to hope. Toby begins to believe it.
What De klokketonen is about
What would you do if the bells above your workplace began to speak your name? That is the question facing Toby Veck, a poor ticket porter who waits for errands outside an old church on the last day of the year. He loves the Chimes in the tower above him.
The Chimes is a Christmas novella by Charles Dickens, published in 1844 and built in four parts he calls quarters. Dickens wrote it to speak up for the poor, and he aimed it at the comfortable people who talked about them and promised to put them down. You meet a loving father, his daughter Meg, a planned wedding, and rich men with firm views. Then the Bells call Toby up the dark tower.
Voor wie is het?. Readers who enjoy winter ghost tales, warm humor, and fiction with a conscience will love this story, along with its bighearted characters and sharp jokes at pompous men.

A ticket porter trots through winter cold
The night wind circles the old church, moaning through the aisles and shaking the steeple. High in the belfry hang the Chimes, bells so old that no one remembers who named them. Their voices can beat a gale to reach a sick child or a worried wife.
Below them, outside the church door, stands Toby Veck. He is a ticket porter, which means he waits in the street to carry letters and parcels for a few pennies. Everyone calls him Trotty because of his quick trot. He is over sixty, thin, and poor. His shoes leak and his nose is red with cold.
Dickens makes Toby lovable by showing his stubborn good will. He trots even when he has no need to, because it makes him feel useful. The Bells are his company, and he thinks he hears them say again and again, keep a good heart.
But on this last day of the old year, Toby is troubled. He reads a dirty old newspaper full of crimes and complaints, and he wonders whether poor people like him have any right to a New Year at all. He asks himself whether they are born bad. This question drives the whole story.
Kind hearts can still be talked into doubting their own worth.
