De Heldere Hoofdhuid in short
The Bright Scalp gathers twelve short pieces from one writer's picture of the American frontier. The opening tale is a story of the Dakota prairie, with a chief who loves a river, a captive girl and a woman who plots against them all. The rest play with elections, runaway lovers, a spider in a cave, a Christmas train, a schoolteacher, a cook and a film of Venice.
What De Heldere Hoofdhuid is about
What happens when a war chief who loves the sound of falling water finds a golden-haired girl under a wagon canvas? The Bright Scalp is a collection of twelve short tales by the Swedish writer Sigge Strömberg, written for readers hungry for news of the American frontier.
The first tale is a dark story of the Dakota prairie. The rest visit Harristown, Lake Superior, the Colorado mountains and even Venice on a cinema screen. They are comic stories of cardsharps, candidates, runaway lovers and con artists. Each hinges on a sudden surprise.
Voor wie is het?. You will love this if you enjoy Westerns told with a grin, short stories with a sting in the last line, and a Swedish writer's view of frontier America.

A Dakota chief rides out to war
The first and darkest tale opens above the Mississippi, where Minnehaha, the Laughing Water, feeds the great river. The young chief Blue Cloud rules this land of lakes, buffalo and prairie. He is a fierce fighter and a skilled hunter, yet he is also a dreamer who sits by the falls and listens to the water.
The elders want him married. He accepts their choice of Swift Doe, a girl of noble birth, and from that day he never goes back to the river.
When the ice breaks, the warriors ride south in war paint. A scout brings news of white emigrants travelling in tall white wagons. The Dakotas send a scout named Slippery Eel to test the guards. A dog smells him, a burning stick lights him for one second, and a rifle shot ends his life.
Blue Cloud waits for the first gray light and then leads the charge, with cloth tied over his horses' nostrils so they will not neigh. The ring of wagons becomes a place of slaughter.
A man who loves quiet things can still lead a raid, and the story never lets you forget both facts.
