De blauwe scarabee in short
The Blue Scarab is a set of seven separate investigations that share one habit of mind. In each, a crime looks closed or hopeless, and Dr. Thorndyke begins with the least noticed facts.
What De blauwe scarabee is about
What can a speck of hat dust, a wax match or a tiny snail shell tell you? In the hands of Dr. Thorndyke, almost everything. The Blue Scarab gathers seven cases by R. Austin Freeman, each beginning with a puzzle that looks too thin to solve.
The tales are told by Thorndyke's friend Dr. Jervis, who watches, guesses wrongly and asks the questions you would ask yourself. Thorndyke is a doctor and a barrister who carries a green research case packed with plaster, wax and a microscope. You need no science to follow along, because Freeman explains each test as it is done.
Voor wie is het?. Readers who love classic detective puzzles, clever deductions explained step by step, and the quiet pleasure of watching a calm expert turn dust, footprints and scraps of paper into proof.

A seal, a letter and a family legend
The first tale opens when Mr. James Blowgrave and his daughter Nellie visit Thorndyke's chambers. Someone has stolen a deed box from their study at Shawstead Manor while the household fought a fire in an outbuilding. The fire looks like a trick to draw everyone out of the house.
Eight days later a parcel arrives. It holds everything from the box except a blue scarab, along with a typed note signed Rudolpho and a wax seal covered in tiny signs. The seal appears to copy the missing scarab, and neither Blowgrave nor his daughter can read the signs.
Then comes the family legend. Blowgrave's great-grandfather Silas gambled a chest of jewels against his brother Reuben. By morning Reuben and the chest had vanished, and blood marked the room.
Thorndyke asks for a large map of the estate and copies the seal in careful ink. Jervis cannot see why. A small theft deserves attention when its odd details seem to belong together.

Tiny facts decide the biggest cases
The strongest idea in these tales is Thorndyke's belief that no fact is too small to count.

Characters, plot and themes
Main characters
- Dr. John Thorndyke A doctor and barrister in the Temple who solves crimes by studying small physical evidence with his research case.
- Dr. Jervis Thorndyke's friend and partner, who tells each tale, tries to reason ahead of his senior and often misses the key fact.
- Polton The skilled laboratory assistant who builds tools, develops film and prepares casts, always glad to help with an investigation.
- Superintendent Miller A genial Scotland Yard officer who trusts Thorndyke and wants a case solid enough to justify an arrest.
- Inspector Badger A stubborn, hard-working detective who doubts Thorndyke's methods but chases criminals with great energy.
- James Blowgrave A Hertfordshire landowner whose deed box is stolen and who hopes to find the family's lost jewels for his daughter.
- Mr. Marchmont A solicitor who brings Thorndyke the problem of a vanished will and expects little from it.
- Mr. Stalker An insurance company officer who relies on Thorndyke when a large claim looks suspicious.
How it ends (spoiler)
In each tale Thorndyke's proof holds. He finds Reuben's skeleton and the chest of jewels, and Harold Bowker is exposed as the thief. Macauley is arrested for the Margate murder. The New Jersey Sphinx is caught and hanged. Baxfield confesses and the will is recovered. The burglar buries the necklace and is caught. The gold is found melted into bolts. The dead man in the rick is Jarman, killed by Reed, who shoots himself.

Vragen over De blauwe scarabee
What is The Blue Scarab about?
It is a collection of seven detective stories by R. Austin Freeman. Dr. Thorndyke and his friend Dr. Jervis solve thefts, murders and frauds by studying small physical clues such as dust, footprints, hairs and documents.
Who is Dr. Thorndyke?
Dr. John Thorndyke is a doctor and barrister who practises in the Temple in London. He uses medicine, chemistry, law and many other fields to read evidence, and carries a green canvas research case full of tools.
Who tells the stories, and who is Jervis?
Dr. Jervis, Thorndyke's friend and colleague, tells each story in his own voice. He is clever and brave but often a step behind, so his questions and mistakes let the reader follow the evidence.
Do I need to read the stories in order?
No. Each tale is a complete case with its own setting, clients and solution, so you can start with any chapter. Reading in order lets you meet Polton, Miller and Badger as they return.
What is the main message of the collection?
The tales show that careful observation, wide knowledge and tested evidence can solve what seems impossible. Small facts that others ignore often carry the answer, and proof must come before any accusation.
