Het geheim van de bisschop in short
The Bishop's Secret is the story of a respected man whose peace breaks on one evening. A scarred stranger calls at the palace, the bishop falls ill, and his family, his chaplain, his doctor and the whole town react in their own ways. Some protect him, some fear for him, and one wants to own him.
What Het geheim van de bisschop is about
What happens to a happy man when a stranger calls at his party and asks to see him alone? In The Bishop's Secret, Dr Pendle, the Bishop of Beorminster, has a fine palace, a gentle wife, three grown children and a spotless name. Then a dark man with a scar across his cheek walks into the library, and the bishop leaves it pale and shaking.
Fergus Hume sets this Victorian novel in a quiet cathedral city where everyone watches everyone else. The tone is light and teasing, but under the comedy runs a plain question. What is the bishop hiding, and who is clever and cruel enough to find out?
Voor wie is het?. If you enjoy cosy cathedral-city settings, sharp comic portraits, tightening secrets and a villain who smiles while he schemes, this Victorian mystery will suit you.

Mrs Pansey rules the cathedral city
The story opens with a carriage ride and a character sketch. Mrs Pansey, an archdeacon's widow, is the best known and most disliked woman in the diocese of Beorminster.
Her weapon is her memory. She knows the history of every family, and she turns a harmless remark into a scandal whenever it suits her.
Her guest is Miss Daisy Norsham, a poor spinster from London who has come to hunt for a husband. On the way to the bishop's reception she asks for names, and Mrs Pansey supplies them with a sneer. Through her scorn we meet the bishop, his daughter Lucy, Mab Arden, the chaplain Mr Cargrim and Dr Graham, who doubts everything.
Hume plays all this for laughter. Yet she hears everything and repeats it, so her tongue will matter once real secrets begin to move.
Gossip in a small city is a force that even a bishop must fear.

Characters, plot and themes
Main characters
- Bishop George Pendle The kindly, stately head of the Beorminster diocese, who hides a heavy secret from his wife and fears what it will do to his family.
- Michael Cargrim The bishop's smooth chaplain, who spies and schemes to force a rich parish out of his patron.
- Mrs Pansey An archdeacon's widow and social bully, who uses her famous memory and sharp tongue to rule the town.
- Miss Whichello A brisk, kindly old spinster who loves her niece Mab and fears a secret from her own past.
- Dr Graham The sharp-tongued, doubting doctor and the bishop's oldest friend, who watches Cargrim and tries to help.
- Gabriel Pendle The bishop's nervous younger son, a curate who secretly loves the barmaid Bell Mosk.
- Bell Mosk The bold, practical barmaid at The Derby Winner, who wants a better life and bargains for it.
- Captain George Pendle The bishop's cheerful soldier son, who wants to marry Mab Arden whatever anyone says.
How it ends (spoiler)
Mosk, the landlord of The Derby Winner, is the murderer. He shot Jentham for the bishop's blackmail money and confesses, then hangs himself in prison. Jentham was Pharaoh Bosvile, the violinist Amaru, and Miss Whichello's certificates establish his marriage to her sister and Mab's legitimate birth. So the bishop's marriage is lawful after all. Cargrim is dismissed, Bell frees Gabriel from his promise and disappears, and George and Mab marry on the day Lucy marries Sir Harry.
