De Aspern-papieren in short
A scholar who worships the poet Jeffrey Aspern arrives in Venice under a false name. He rents rooms from the poet's aged lover, Juliana Bordereau, and her niece, Miss Tita, and sets out to win the letters they guard. He uses flowers, money, flattery, and the loneliness of a woman who has never been allowed a life.
What De Aspern-papieren is about
What would you do to hold the love letters of a poet you worship? The man who tells this story, a scholar who never gives his name, answers by lying. He takes a false name, rents rooms in a crumbling palace in Venice, and plants a garden, all to get close to one very old woman and the papers she keeps.
The Aspern Papers is a short novel by Henry James, an American who spent most of his life in Europe. The scholar tells the tale himself, so you see his schemes through his own eyes and notice what he cannot see about himself.
Voor wie is het?. This book is for readers who love Venice, clever psychological portraits, and narrators who give themselves away. It suits anyone drawn to literary mysteries and quiet duels.

A simple plan: become the lodger
The plan begins in Venice. The narrator has crossed from England with one burning aim. Jeffrey Aspern, the poet he worships, once loved a woman named Juliana Bordereau, and she is somehow still alive. She lives with her niece in a dim, decaying palace on a quiet canal, and she is believed to keep his letters and papers.
The narrator and his fellow scholar John Cumnor have spent years clearing Aspern's name of every charge of bad conduct toward women. They treat the poet as a god and themselves as his ministers. Everyone who knew him is gone, and Miss Bordereau alone survives. Direct requests have already failed. Cumnor wrote twice, and the niece answered in six cold lines: there are no papers, and if there were, nobody would see them.
Mrs. Prest, an English friend who has lived in Venice for fifteen years, supplies the plan. Ask to be taken in as a lodger, she says, since the way to become an acquaintance is first to become an inmate. He notices a walled garden beside the house, which could be his pretext. He also carries a visiting card engraved with a false name.
He admits that hypocrisy and duplicity are his only chance, and he does not blink. A worthy goal can make a person comfortable with a shabby method.

How it ends (spoiler)
Juliana dies, and Miss Tita tells the narrator the papers survive but she cannot show them to a stranger. She hints that they would be his if he were family. He flees in alarm, then changes his mind and returns, only to learn she burned every paper in the kitchen. He keeps the poet's portrait above his desk, and it torments him.

What is The Aspern Papers about?
An unnamed scholar goes to Venice under a false name to rent rooms from an aged woman who was once the lover of a great poet. He hopes to win the poet's letters from her and her niece.
Who is Jeffrey Aspern in The Aspern Papers?
Aspern is an invented American poet of the early nineteenth century. He never appears in the story, but the narrator reveres him and believes Juliana Bordereau, his former lover, still keeps his letters.
Is The Aspern Papers based on a true story?
The characters are made up, but the idea came from a real anecdote about an old woman in Italy and a literary figure's letters. Henry James first published the tale in 1888.
Is The Aspern Papers easy to read?
The book is short and told in a clear first-person voice, with brisk dialogue, lively scenes, and a vivid Venetian setting. The tension builds in each chapter, so it is easy to follow.
What is the main message of The Aspern Papers?
The tale asks what devotion to art can justify. It shows how love of a poet can excuse deceit, and it weighs a dead reputation against the feelings of living people.
