De Oudheidkundige — compleet in short

The Antiquary follows a stranger named Lovel and an old collector named Oldbuck through a few weeks on the northeast coast of Scotland. A coach ride makes them friends, a Roman camp makes Oldbuck look foolish, and a tide at the foot of a cliff shows who has real courage. A duel, a treasure hunt led by a German fraud and the death of a fisherman's son pull in neighbours of every class.

What De Oudheidkundige — compleet is about

A coach comes late. Two strangers wait in the heat of an Edinburgh street. One is a young man who will not say why he is travelling. The other is an old gentleman in a powdered wig with a heavy folio under his arm, furious at first, then happily lost in talk of Roman camps.

The Antiquary is Walter Scott's novel of Scotland in the last years of the eighteenth century, published in 1816. It gives you a miserly scholar, a ruined baronet, a gloomy earl and a wandering beggar, with comedy, a sea rescue, a ghost story and a treasure hunt.

Voor wie is het?. You will enjoy this if you like warm comedy, eccentric characters and old Scottish landscapes, with a sea rescue, a haunted bedroom and buried silver along the way.

A late coach brings two strangers together

A young man of good manners waits at the Queensferry coach stand while noon passes. The only other passenger arrives in a rush, an old man in a powdered wig with a big book in a parcel. He scolds the ticket seller for a handbill that lies like a military bulletin.

On the road he calms down and opens the book, an account of the Roman remains in Scotland. He explains camps, altars and urns with delight. The young man knows his classics and asks good questions, and that wins the old man's heart. When a horse loses a shoe, he stops the coach, partly from kindness and partly because a Pictish camp lies beside the road.

Over dinner we learn that he is Jonathan Oldbuck, a bachelor laird near Fairport, careful with every shilling and endlessly curious about the past. The young man gives his name as Lovel and says little more. Oldbuck quietly pays the bill and shares a chaise with him. A shared love of old things can turn two strangers into friends.

  • Edie Ochiltree A sharp-tongued old beggar and King's Bedesman who wanders the district, knows everyone's business and wants only to be independent.

  • Lord Glenallan A gloomy, grief-worn earl who lives like a hermit and seeks the truth about a wrong done to him long ago.

How it ends (spoiler)

Lovel is Major Neville, the son of Lord Glenallan and Eveline Neville, whose secret marriage Elspeth's confession proves. Edie, with Taffril's seamen, had buried the silver that saved Sir Arthur, and Lovel supplied it. A false invasion alarm brings Lovel back in uniform, and the Earl embraces his son. Lovel marries Isabella, Hector prospers, and Oldbuck keeps urging the new Lord Geraldin to write his poem.

What is The Antiquary about?

It follows Jonathan Oldbuck, a collector of old things, and a mysterious young man named Lovel on the Scottish coast. A rescue from the tide, a treasure hunt and a family secret link their lives with a baronet and a beggar.

Who is Edie Ochiltree?

Edie is an old wandering beggar and King's Bedesman, one of the privileged poor who could beg anywhere in Scotland. He is witty, brave and well informed, and he plays a larger part in the plot than anyone expects.

When was The Antiquary written and is it a true story?

Scott published it in 1816, setting it in the 1790s. The people and plot are invented, but some scenes rest on real incidents, such as a false invasion alarm, and Edie was inspired by a real beggar.

Is The Antiquary easy to read?

Its comic scenes, short chapters and lively dialogue make it welcoming. Oldbuck's talk is full of jokes, and the Scots speech of Edie and the fisherfolk adds colour and flavour that reward reading aloud.

What is the main message of The Antiquary?

Scott suggests that character matters more than rank or learning. A stingy old scholar, a proud baronet and a poor beggar all show loyalty and kindness, and love of the past should lead us back to the living.
