Seven Plumsteads decide to sail for Australia

The story opens in a crowded village schoolroom in England, where a sweating lecturer from Sydney praises New South Wales. Nobody cheers him harder than the seven Plumstead children. He begins to suspect he is being laughed at, though they simply love every word.

Nealie, the eldest at nineteen, whispers a thought along the row. Their father, Dr. Plumstead, has lived in Australia for nearly seven years, lonely and far away. What if they all went to him and helped him?

They live with a thin, faded widow in the house of their dead great-aunt. No one wants them there, and money is scarce. Years ago their father begged them not to write, and they obeyed, yet they pity him instead of themselves. A shared plan and a cheerful heart turn loneliness into a reason to set out.

Vragen over De zeven avonturiers

What is The Adventurous Seven about?

It follows seven English brothers and sisters who sail to New South Wales to join their father, a doctor. They travel by ship and wagon, meet helpful strangers, and face stampedes, storms, and a surprise at the end of the road.

Who are the seven children in The Adventurous Seven?

They are Nealie, Rupert, Sylvia, Rumple, Don, Billykins, and Ducky, the Plumstead family. Nealie is the eldest and acts as mother, Rupert is lame, Rumple writes poetry, and Ducky is the youngest.

Why does Rumple forget the letter, and why does it matter?

Mr. Runciman writes a letter telling Dr. Plumstead that his children are on their way, and Rumple pockets it instead of posting it. Because it never reaches the father, he is not waiting for his children when they arrive in Australia.

When was The Adventurous Seven written, and is it a true story?

Bessie Marchant, who died in 1941, wrote it as an adventure story for young readers in the early twentieth century. It is fiction, though it draws on real places such as Sydney, Botany Bay, and the gold and cattle country of New South Wales.

Is The Adventurous Seven easy to read?

Yes, its chapters are short, its scenes are quick, and its dialogue is lively. The humor, the clear settings, and the children's cheerful voices make it easy to follow and enjoyable to hear read aloud.
