Het 13e district in short
The 13th District follows one man's rise through the ordinary machinery of American politics. Jerome Garwood wins a nomination, a seat in Congress, and the love of a good woman, and each win asks him for a small compromise. Rankin brings the energy, Pusey the schemes, Bailey the cold skill, and Emily the conscience.
What Het 13e district is about
Picture a small Illinois station on a hot August afternoon. A train rolls in, a band strikes up, and a crowd roars the name of a tired young lawyer who has just won his party's nomination for Congress. Jerome Garwood feels, for the first time, that he matters. But does the crowd love him, or only the winner?
That question runs through The 13th District by Brand Whitlock, a writer who knew local politics from the inside. His novel follows Garwood from Grand Prairie to Washington and back. Beside him stand Emily Harkness, the banker's daughter who believes in him, and Jim Rankin, the loyal party manager who carries him to office.
Voor wie is het?. Readers who enjoy small-town American life will love the sharp portraits of politicians and editors, the warm humor, and a love story shaped by conventions.

A hero's welcome hides a cynical truth
The book opens with a triumph. Garwood rides a train into Grand Prairie after a convention has given him the nomination for Congress. It took one thousand two hundred and nine ballots. At the station a band, a carriage with two white horses, and a roaring crowd are waiting.
Garwood is surprised by every piece of it. His eyes fill with tears, and then he practices a calm, stern face for history. Then Rankin says something that stings. If they had lost, he tells Garwood, nobody would have turned out to comfort him. Garwood gives a short speech from the hotel balcony, thanking everyone and promising nothing.
That night he visits Emily Harkness, the woman he loves. He tells her how Rankin worked through the night to turn the delegates, and when she asks how, he says he does not want to know. Later he asks whether she would love him no matter what he had done. She answers that he could do nothing dishonorable, and his chance to confess slips away.
Applause follows winners, and the book asks at once what a winner must do to win.

Vragen over Het 13e district
What is The 13th District about?
It follows Jerome Garwood, a young Illinois lawyer who wins nomination and election to Congress. The story shows the bargains, newspaper attacks, county conventions and patronage battles behind his rise, and how his marriage to Emily Harkness is shaped by them.
Who is Jim Rankin in The 13th District?
Rankin is the big, jovial chairman who manages Garwood's campaigns. He knows every county leader, works for the post office as his reward, and gives his friend loyalty that is tested by Pusey and by Garwood's growing ambition.
What does roorback mean in The 13th District?
Emily asks Garwood the word's meaning, and he says it is a lie told because politics requires it. A roorback is a false story spread near an election to harm a candidate, and the scene shows how Garwood has changed.
Is The 13th District based on real politics?
It is fiction, but Brand Whitlock drew on close knowledge of how local politics worked. The setting is a small Illinois district in the age of torchlight parades, county conventions and horse-drawn carriages, and its methods feel true to that world.
Is The 13th District easy to follow?
Yes, the scenes are short and clear. Chapters move between public events and private experiences, while lively dialogue and wit help distinguish the many characters.
