Burcht der Terreur in short
Terror Keep tells of an old criminal genius who walks out of Broadmoor with a head full of plans, and of the mild detective who has spent years studying him. Flack wants gold and revenge. Reeder wants him caught and Margaret Belman safe.
What Burcht der Terreur is about
What would you do if you were a master criminal locked in Broadmoor with nothing but a pen? John Flack has written sixty-three handwritten volumes on crime. Then an officer is found with his throat cut, the ward door stands open, and the old man is gone.
Edgar Wallace wrote Terror Keep around Mr. J. G. Reeder, a detective at the Public Prosecutor's Office. Reeder looks like a mild Scottish butler, apologises for everything, and says without a blush that he has a criminal mind. You get a hunt with a clock on it, a gray castle above the sea, secret passages and a missing gold lorry.
Voor wie is het?. Readers who love a hunt for a cunning villain, a detective who hides a sharp mind behind polite muddle, secret passages in an old castle, and quick classic British crime storytelling.

A caged genius escapes and names his enemies
Terror Keep opens inside Broadmoor, the asylum for criminals judged insane. There the old crook John Flack shuffles around the grounds, and visitors have him pointed out as the cleverest crook in the world, with nine murders behind him. For six quiet years he reads and writes.
His life's work is a treatise on crime in sixty-three handwritten volumes. The Governor reads one sample, a plan to rob a guarded bank vault, and finds it as exact as a military order. Chief Inspector Simpson of Scotland Yard visits to ask where the books are hidden. Flack answers with threats. He dreams of a new way to steal a million, a foggy night alone with Reeder, and the death of George Ravini, who sold him to the police. Soon after, the officer of his ward is found with his throat cut.
Reeder tells Margaret Belman, who is twenty-three, about Flack and admits, with many ums, that he is fond of her. He wants her out of the city. At Waterloo Station he frightens off Ravini, who has been pestering her. A mild man's fear for one young woman sets the whole chase in motion.

As earth tremors collapse the cliffs, Reeder, now without whiskers, opens the safe and carries her to safety. Flack's boat is lost. Olga is spared.
