Studies en gesprekken: eerste reeks in short

Studies and Chats teaches German the way a good teacher might teach a few friends over a winter. It starts with colors and the clock, moves through poems, fairy tales, and history, and closes with friendship, memorized poems, and grammar tables. Each step rests on the one before it.

What Studies en gesprekken: eerste reeks is about

What if a language book barely changed in fifteen years because it simply worked? The sixteenth edition, with its preface dated New York, June 1, 1895, says just that about Studies and Chats, a German reader by Sigmon M. Stern for English speakers.

The book follows a small circle in New York around 1878. Mr. Meister, a teacher born in Germany, talks with his pupils Louis, Anna, Bella, and Otto. They answer questions, trade anecdotes, recite poems, read letters from Berlin, and hear fairy tales. Stern meant these scenes to replace the disconnected exercises of the usual beginner's book. You get a warm path into German, and the first step is the simplest: answer a question.

Voor wie is het?. You will love this book if you enjoy language learning, old classrooms, folk tales, German poems, and the warm company of a teacher and his pupils talking their way into a new tongue.

The 10 key ideas

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

Begin by answering simple questions aloud

The book opens with Mr. Meister holding a brown book and asking Bella whether the grass is green. She answers in a full sentence, and he repeats it back in agreement. Question and answer, again and again, is the whole method of the first chapter.

The questions start with colors, the seasons, and the rose in the garden in December. Each answer reuses words the pupils have just heard, so they never face a wall of new vocabulary. Then Mr. Meister counts. He builds the numbers up to a million in a few minutes and explains seventy as seven times ten.

The pupils get praise early. When Louis says he cannot speak German, the teacher shows him that he just did. Confidence comes before correctness. Speak from the first day, in short true sentences about things you can see.

Say simple true things aloud, again and again, and let each answer carry the next question.

Vragen over Studies en gesprekken: eerste reeks

What is Studies and Chats about?

It is a German reader for English speakers, told as lessons between a teacher, Mr. Meister, and four pupils in New York. They talk, tell anecdotes, read letters and poems, and hear fairy tales.

Who are Mr. Meister, Louis, Anna, Bella and Otto?

Mr. Meister is a German-born teacher. Louis, Anna, and Bella are his pupils, and Otto is Louis's brother, who already speaks good German and helps explain words to the others.

Which poems and fairy tales are in Studies and Chats?

Among them are Rückert's little tree, Goethe's little rose and Erl-King, Hoffmann's sheep poem, Schiller's Hostage and Diver, and the Grimm tales of Mother Holle, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella.

Is Studies and Chats easy to follow?

The lessons are short chats with clear questions and answers, and English glosses stand beside new words. Stories, jokes, and poems keep each scene lively, so a reader can pick up the thread easily.

What is the main message of Studies and Chats?

A language is best learned by speaking, listening, and reading real stories with friends. Patience lets words grow naturally, and the culture behind the language, with its poems and customs, makes the learning last.
