Verhalen van Hans Christian Andersen in short
The seven tales share a few close questions. Can a cold heart be healed? What is a living voice worth beside a shiny copy? How do people judge what is real? What do we risk when we long for more than we have? And what does pride cost a family? Andersen answers with plain scenes and surprising turns. Children, servants and birds often see more truly than kings and ministers.
What Verhalen van Hans Christian Andersen is about
What if one speck of glass in your eye made everything you loved look ugly and flawed? That is what happens to a boy named Kay, and it sends a girl named Gerda barefoot into a frozen world to find him.
This collection gathers seven fairy tales by H. C. Andersen, the Danish writer who made new stories for children and grown listeners alike. The Snow Queen comes first, followed by six more tales. You get the people, the places and the turns of each story, and the ideas beneath them: what is real and what is only shiny, and what we give up for love.
Voor wie is het?. This book is for lovers of fairy tales who like a clear story with a sharp point, and for parents and grandparents who read aloud.

A shattered mirror begins The Snow Queen
The Snow Queen opens with a demon and his mirror. It shrinks everything good and beautiful and makes everything bad stand out.
The mirror breaks into billions of pieces, and every grain keeps the power of the whole. Some land in eyes and make people see only faults. Some sink into hearts and turn them to ice.
Then the tale moves to two children, Kay and Gerda. Their attics face each other across a gutter, with rosebushes in window boxes between them.
One afternoon Kay cries out that something has struck his heart and his eye. A grain of the mirror has gone in. At once he sneers at the roses and tells Gerda she looks ugly when she cries. He prefers snowflakes, because they have no flaws.
In the square he ties his sled to a tall white sledge. Its driver is the Snow Queen. She kisses him twice, and he forgets Gerda.
The habit of seeing only flaws can feel like sharp judgment while it slowly freezes the heart.

- Gerda Kay's devoted friend, who loses her red shoes at the river while seeking him and trusts her heart when others offer comfort or tricks.

- The Little Robber Girl A wild, spoiled girl who sleeps with a knife and keeps a hundred pigeons, yet helps Gerda on her way.
- The Nightingale A plain gray bird whose song moves an emperor to tears, and who sings best among the trees rather than in a gilded cage.
- The Little Mermaid The youngest sea princess, who longs for the human world and an immortal soul and is willing to pay with her voice.
- The Emperor A ruler so fond of new clothes that he walks in a procession wearing nothing while everyone praises his imaginary outfit.
- Waldemar Daa A proud lord of Borreby Hall who cuts down a forest and turns to alchemy in hope of red gold.
How it ends (spoiler)
In The Snow Queen, Gerda's warm tears reach Kay's frozen heart and melt the splinter, and the two walk home as grown-ups who are still children at heart. The Nightingale's song drives Death from the emperor's bed, and he lives. The Garden of Paradise is lost when the prince kisses the Fairy. The little mermaid does not kill the prince, becomes sea foam, and rises as a daughter of the air. A child cries out that the emperor has nothing on.

Vragen over Verhalen van Hans Christian Andersen
What stories are in Stories from Hans Andersen?
The collection includes The Snow Queen, The Nightingale, The Real Princess, The Garden of Paradise, The Mermaid, The Emperor's New Clothes and The Wind's Tale. Each one has its own setting, from a snowbound northern palace to the depths of the sea.
What is The Snow Queen about?
It follows Gerda as she searches for her friend Kay, whose heart and eye are pierced by splinters of a demon's mirror. She meets a magic gardener, a crow, a robber girl and two wise women on her way north.
What does the mechanical bird mean in The Nightingale?
The jeweled bird stands for polished, predictable imitation, while the plain real nightingale stands for living song. The tale asks readers to value what comes from life over what only glitters and repeats.
What is the message of The Emperor's New Clothes?
The tale shows how fear of looking foolish makes people agree to something they know is false. Honesty often comes from those with nothing to lose, and pride can keep a ruler from hearing the truth.
Are these fairy tales easy to read?
Yes, in the sense that the stories are clear and told in scenes. Short sections, talking animals, vivid pictures and a warm narrator make them easy to follow and good for reading aloud.
