Schetsen in short

Taken together, the pieces show a young writer trying every door. The tales are romances of secret love, with a dove, a rope of shawls and a mysterious guest. The Dresden conversation turns a medical visit into a talk about purpose.

What Schetsen is about

A white dove slips through a tower window with a love letter under its wing. Inside sits Lady Imogene, locked up by her father, the Count of Charolois, for loving the heir of the rival castle. Soon a huntsman raises a crossbow at the bird.

Benjamin Disraeli, remembered as a British prime minister, wrote these pieces with a pen in one hand and politics in the other. The book gathers short fiction, travel sketches, war reporting and argument. You meet a consul's daughter and a mysterious traveler, ride with an Egyptian army, wander the ruins of Thebes, and walk through a Munich built by a poet-king.

Voor wie is het?. Readers who enjoy old romance, sunlit travel, Egyptian ruins, drawing-room wit and sharp political argument will love this collection. It also suits those curious about the young Disraeli.

The 8 key ideas

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

A dove carries love across a feud

The first tale is set in a valley split by hatred. On one height stands Charolois Castle, home of a count whose only son died in a tournament. On the other rises Branchimont, whose baron dealt that fatal blow by accident and paid for it with his life.

Into this feud falls a love. Lady Imogene meets Lothair, the young Lord Branchimont, disguised as a pilgrim, beside the shrine that holds her brother's heart. Her father learns of the meetings and shuts her in a high tower under the watch of a sour old servant named Martha.

Then a snow-white pigeon called Mignon lands on a chair with a letter from Lothair beneath its wing. For the first time since her capture, she smiles. Each day the bird flies between the lovers. But Rufus, the count's ruthless huntsman, has a sharp eye for birds, and he decides to follow its path with his crossbow.

The tone is that of an old ballad turned into prose, with moonlit towers, solemn vows and a narrator who weeps over his own tale. Love and hatred hang on one thin thread.

Vragen over Schetsen

What is Sketches by Benjamin Disraeli about?

It is a collection of short romantic tales, travel sketches from Egypt, Syria and the Bosphorus, an essay on Munich, a report on Ibrahim Pasha's Syrian war, and a political pamphlet on the Whigs and the English constitution.

Is Sketches a novel or a set of separate pieces?

It is a set of separate pieces. Two are tales of love and mystery, one is a conversation set in Dresden, and the rest are travel writing, reporting and political argument, each readable on its own.

Who is Ibrahim Pasha in this book?

He is the general sent by Mehemet Ali, the ruler of Egypt, to invade Syria in 1831. The essay follows his sieges and victories, and a shorter sketch shows him in conversation with the author.

What is The Spirit of Whiggism?

It is a political pamphlet in several short chapters. Disraeli argues that the Whigs seek rule by a few great families, and that the English constitution, with Crown, Lords, Commons and Church, better protects liberty.

Is Sketches worth reading today?

It gives a lively view of the young Disraeli and of Victorian ideas about romance, the East, art and politics. The short, varied pieces let you taste several moods and subjects in one book.
