Sonnetten van Shakespeare in short
Shakespeare's Sonnets is a sequence of 154 poems in which one speaker tells of love for a beautiful young man, a troubled bond with a rival and a bitter passion for a dark-haired woman. It opens by urging the young man to have a child, and then it makes a bolder claim. Verse itself can hold a person against the scythe of time.
What Sonnetten van Shakespeare is about
A voice urges a beautiful young man to look in his mirror and preserve his image in a child. Forty winters will dig trenches in your brow, it says, so give the world a child before your beauty is gone. Shakespeare's Sonnets begin with a plea that beauty should live on through offspring, an unusual opening for love poems.
The book holds 154 poems, mostly of fourteen lines, printed together in 1609. William Shakespeare leaves the beloveds unnamed, but the speaker calls himself Will. You meet a poet, a beautiful young man he loves, a rival poet, and a dark-haired woman who both draws him and wounds him.
Voor wie is het?. Readers who enjoy poems about love, memory and time will love this collection, as will anyone curious about the origins of famous lines about summer days.

A sequence of 154 poems with three voices
Shakespeare's Sonnets is a sequence, not a loose pile of poems. The first 126 poems speak to a young man whom the poet loves and praises. The last 28 turn to a woman, often called the dark lady, because the poems describe her black hair and dark eyes. A few poems at the very end retell an old tale about the god Cupid.
Shakespeare builds most of them from three four-line units and a closing pair of lines that rhyme together. Each unit pushes the thought one step further. The last pair gathers it up, turns it around, or lands a final blow.
The speaker is called I, and it is tempting to read him as Shakespeare himself. The poems leave the beloveds unnamed, though the speaker gives his own name as Will. Nobody can say for sure who the young man or the dark lady was. What the poems give you instead is a set of feelings so sharply drawn that you do not need a name to follow them.
The book also has a loose story. The poet urges the young man to marry, then falls into deep love. The poet forgives the young man's wrong, a rival poet later appears, and the sequence moves on to a darker affair with the woman. The collection is a single drama of one speaker and the two people who hold his heart.

Vragen over Sonnetten van Shakespeare
What are Shakespeare's Sonnets about?
They are 154 poems about love, beauty, time and the power of verse to keep memory alive. Most address a young man, a later group speaks to a dark-haired woman, and the poet's feelings run from praise to jealousy to forgiveness.
Who is the fair youth and who is the dark lady?
The poems never name them, and scholars have offered many guesses without proof. The fair youth is the young man praised in poems one to 126, and the dark lady is the woman addressed in most of poems 127 to 152.
What is a sonnet and how are these poems built?
A sonnet is a poem of fourteen lines. Shakespeare usually uses three four-line units and a final rhyming pair. Each unit moves the thought forward, and the closing pair often turns or sums up the idea with a sharp point.
Are Shakespeare's Sonnets autobiographical?
The poems are written in the first person, so many readers link them to Shakespeare's life, but nothing in them confirms it. They were printed in 1609, and the speaker may be a created voice as much as the author himself.
Which Shakespeare sonnets should I read first?
Good starting points are sonnets 18, 29, 30, 73, 116 and 130. Each stands alone, has a clear shape, and shows a different mood, from tender praise and comfort to a comic mock of love poetry.
