William Shakespeare on death

William Shakespeare treated death as a troubling part of human life, bound up with grief, conscience and the consequences of action. His plays explored how the dead continued to shape the choices of the living, without offering a simple answer to loss. In Hamlet, mourning became entangled with doubt and revenge. In Macbeth, killing failed to bring security. Shakespeare’s treatment of death drew attention not only to life’s ending, but also to the fear, responsibility and suffering surrounding it.
Grief unsettled familiar duties
Hamlet’s father’s death changed how the prince understood his family and his obligations. The ghost’s accusation made mourning harder: Hamlet had to consider whether the spirit deserved belief and whether revenge could answer the wrong without violating his conscience.
Violence multiplied rather than settled
Macbeth killed Duncan to gain the crown, but possession brought fresh fears rather than rest. His growing suspicion of Banquo led him toward further murder. Shakespeare showed how an attempt to secure power through death could create an expanding need for violence.
A survivor carried the story
The ending of Hamlet left Horatio alive to tell what had happened after the poisoned duel killed the prince and others. Death ended Hamlet’s struggle, but the survivor’s task gave a place to truthful remembrance amid deception and loss.
