Oude Indiaanse Legenden in short

Old Indian Legends collects fourteen tales from Dakota tradition, retold by Zitkala-Sa. They begin with Iktomi, the spider fairy who tricks ducks, begs a stone for food, cheats a muskrat, and keeps wishing to be someone else. The book then moves to a badger family and a bear, an avenger born from buffalo blood, and a red eagle that holds a camp in fear.

What Oude Indiaanse Legenden is about

Picture a spider fairy in beaded buckskins, his face painted red and yellow, hopping across the plain with a bundle of dry grass on his back. He is on his way to fool a flock of ducks into dancing with their eyes shut. That is Iktomi, the trouble-maker at the heart of Old Indian Legends.

Zitkala-Sa, a Dakota writer who died in 1938, retells fourteen tales from the oral tradition of her people. She writes close to the spoken word, with Dakota calls, short songs and a storyteller who sometimes speaks to little readers. Each tale hides a lesson about sharing, pride and kindness.

Voor wie is het?. You will love this book if you enjoy folktales, trickster stories and animal fables, or want short tales to read aloud to children and friends.

The story in 8 parts

Iktomi tricks the ducks with a song

The book opens by showing who Iktomi is. He is a spider fairy who dresses like a Dakota brave in deerskin leggings, tiny beaded moccasins and a jacket sewn with bright beads. He would rather set a trap than hunt honestly, and nobody helps him when he is in trouble.

One day, hungry in his teepee, Iktomi ties dry grass into a bundle and hops to a hilltop. He sees wild ducks dancing and feasting in the marshes. Playing a bent traveller, he staggers into view and tells the curious ducks that his bundle holds songs. Iktomi builds a round straw hut, and the fat ducks waddle in one by one. In the dim hut he beats a drum and sings that any dancer who opens their eyes will have red eyes forever. Every duck dances blind. Only Skiska dares to peek, and his cry sends the flock flying out with red eyes.

Iktomi carries his catch home and sets the ducks to roast around a big fire. Then a squeaky old tree begs for help, and he climbs up to silence it. A gust of wind pinches his foot in a cracked limb. Gray wolves come across the plain, and Iktomi's own shouting tells them where the feast is.

Cleverness used only to grab what you want leaves you stuck in a tree watching someone else eat.

Characters, plot and themes

Main characters

  • Iktomi A vain, crafty spider fairy in beaded buckskins who tricks others for food and glory, and never learns to share.
  • Inyan The great stone grandfather on the hillside who has listened to prayers for more than a thousand seasons.
  • Father Badger A kind hunter who feeds a hungry stranger and loses his home, then asks the Great Spirit for help.
  • The Avenger A young Dakota brave with a magic arrow, born from buffalo blood, who defends the helpless and brings justice.
  • Patkasa A tired turtle hunter who finds a deer for his hungry children and is drawn into a contest by Iktomi.
  • Manstin A kindhearted rabbit warrior who rescues a stolen baby and then trades his eyes for an easy life.
  • Iya A giant with spindly legs who disguises himself as a baby to swallow a camp in the night.

How it ends (spoiler)

The last tale ends in a flood. Iktomi, swallowed with the lake by Iya the Eater, stabs upward with his knife from inside the giant's stomach. The water pours out and drowns the villagers who tried to boil the Fish and the Turtle. The two small warriors come ashore, go home painted as victors, and sing loudly. The red eagle tale ends with the avenger shooting the bird and winning the chief's daughter.

Vragen over Oude Indiaanse Legenden

What is Old Indian Legends about?

It is a collection of fourteen short Dakota tales retold by Zitkala-Sa. Most feature Iktomi, the spider trickster, and others tell of badgers, a red eagle, a toad and a lost boy, and a giant who eats camps.

Who is Iktomi in Dakota stories?

Iktomi is a spider fairy and trickster who dresses like a Dakota brave. He is clever, vain and lonely, and his schemes for food and glory usually bring him trouble instead of reward.

What does Koda Ni Dakota mean?

It is the song of a yellow-breasted bird in The Tree-Bound. The storyteller explains that it means Friend, you're a Dakota, and the bird seems to be greeting the avenger as he walks across the plain.

Is Old Indian Legends easy to read?

Yes, the tales are told in a warm, spoken voice, with short scenes, clear lessons and Dakota words explained as they appear. Each story stands alone, so you can read one at a time or aloud to others.

What is the main message of the book?

The tales teach that sharing, kindness and honesty make a good life, while vanity, greed and tricks lead to trouble. Cleverness without wisdom, shown by Iktomi, is the book's clearest warning.
