Oh, You Tex! in short

Oh, You Tex! follows Jack Roberts from lonely line rider to Texas Ranger in the Panhandle. He sees a rustler at work, loses his job after beating his employer's son, and joins Captain Ellison's Rangers. From there the book moves through a robbery and a murder, a mud trap, a mob at the jail, a Kiowa attack and a bluff in Box Canyon.

What Oh, You Tex! is about

Would you ride alone across empty Texas, then walk into a saloon to question the very men you are chasing? Jack Roberts, a twenty-one-year-old line rider nicknamed Tex, does just that in Oh, You Tex! The story opens on a spring morning in the Panhandle, before barbed wire, when a cowboy is the only fence a herd knows.

You meet a young man with a quick wit and a stubborn sense of right.

Voor wie is het?. If you enjoy Western adventure with a quick-witted hero, frontier humor, Texas Rangers and gunfights won by nerve, this book is yours. It also suits readers who like a young love story.

A lone line rider spots a rustler at work

The book begins with Jack Roberts riding the range for the A T O ranch, owned by Clint Wadley.

Late in the day Roberts sees a thin spiral of smoke. A man, a cow, a calf and a fire mean someone is branding, and the man waves his hat to warn him away. When the rider keeps coming, a rifle bullet kicks up dust in front of him. Roberts shouts something cheerful and leaves, but only to circle toward Box Canyon.

From a bluff he spots a slender, dark rider on a sorrel with white markings. In the sand he finds a hoofprint with a left hind hoof broken in an odd way. A masked man with a rifle orders him back, and Roberts obeys at an easy walk. Soon after, Wadley offers him a trail herd to lead, and he meets Wadley's daughter Ramona.

Reading small signs closely is how Roberts stays alive and gets ahead.

  • Ramona Wadley The nearly seventeen-year-old daughter of the cattle king, spirited and kind, who wants to protect her family and cannot help being drawn to the Ranger who saved her.
  • Clint Wadley The gruff owner of the A T O ranch and an old gunfighter, who loves his daughter, mourns his wild son and wants justice done.
  • Arthur Ridley A gentle young Easterner who wants to prove himself on the frontier and win Ramona, though fear keeps tripping him up.
  • Captain Jim Ellison The small, fiery, goateed head of the Rangers in the Panhandle, who adores his men and wants the Dinsmores brought to justice.
  • Pete Dinsmore The heavy, jade-eyed leader of a rustler gang, proud of his name for badness and hungry for revenge on the Ranger who humbled him.
  • Homer Dinsmore Pete's cool-headed brother and a dangerous outlaw who follows a rough code of loyalty and fair play.
  • Jumbo Wilkins A huge, talkative line rider and Roberts's friend, who loves gossip, food and a good scrap, and stands by him when it counts.

How it ends (spoiler)

Roberts finally faces a hard choice between his badge and the people he loves. He resigns from the Rangers, ties up the jailer in a fair fight and sets the prisoner Homer Dinsmore free, then confesses to Captain Ellison. With Wadley's help, the Governor agrees to look away. Ramona and Jack are married in Clarendon, and Jumbo Wilkins cheers them off to the ranch.
