Mijn leven in vele staten en in vreemde landen in short

Train's memoir follows one stubborn path. An orphan reaches a New England farm, learns work and strict rules, and walks into a Boston shipping house at sixteen. From there he builds clippers, runs offices in Liverpool and Melbourne and travels through Asia.

What Mijn leven in vele staten en in vreemde landen is about

What does it feel like to be shipped across the sea at four years old, labelled like a bag of coffee, after your mother and sisters have died? George Francis Train answers that question in the first pages of his memoir, and then never stands still.

Train dictated this life story in 1902 from a small room in the Mills Hotel in New York. He says he never knowingly lied. You will meet a farm boy and a young shipping manager, then follow him to Melbourne, China and Paris, to railways, a firing squad and a cell at the Tombs.

Voor wie is het?. You will love this if you enjoy larger-than-life memoirs, tales of ships, railways and gold rushes, and a narrator who tells every story with a wink and a boast.

An orphan shipped north like freight

Train opens with his earliest memory, and it is a dark one. In New Orleans in 1833, yellow fever empties the city.

His three little sisters are laid in rough pine boxes. Then a larger box is carried out for his mother. The boy watches from the window and never forgets.

His father pins a card to his coat, naming him as freight for a Boston uncle aboard the ship Henry. The father kisses him and stays behind. He never sees his father again. Sixty years later an aunt finds the letter his father wrote the day the ship sailed, and Train says it came like a cry from the dead.

A life that begins with losing everything can still become a life of motion and nerve.

Vragen over Mijn leven in vele staten en in vreemde landen

What is My Life in Many States and in Foreign Lands about?

It is the dictated life story of George Francis Train, from his orphaned childhood in New Orleans through shipping, railways, travel and politics. He describes clippers, Liverpool, Melbourne, Asia, the Union Pacific, the French Commune and his trips around the world.

Did George Francis Train really inspire Around the World in Eighty Days?

Train says Jules Verne based his novel on Train's own 1870 trip, which he completed in eighty days. That is his claim in the book. He also made two later circuits, in sixty-seven and a half days and in sixty.

What is the Crédit Mobilier in Train's story?

Train says he adapted a French credit idea to American use by buying a Pennsylvania charter and renaming it the Crédit Mobilier of America. It financed the Union Pacific Railway, and he calls it the first trust in the country.

Is the book easy to follow?

It reads like a lively conversation, since Train spoke it aloud. Short chapters, funny anecdotes and plain language carry you from one place to the next, and each chapter centers on one stage of his life, so it is simple to pick up.

Why was Train declared a lunatic?

Train says he printed three columns of Bible quotations in his paper to defend two women charged with obscenity. He was arrested, never tried on that charge and held as insane by the courts. He treats it as a persecution.
