My Lady Ludlow in short
My Lady Ludlow follows a countess who lives by the customs of the previous century and a young vicar who believes every child should learn to read. Through the eyes of a crippled girl, Margaret Dawson, it moves through quarrels, rescues, and small reconciliations. The lady fears that education will bring revolution, and she tells a tale from France to explain why.
What My Lady Ludlow is about
What happens when a young clergyman preaches about a Sunday school despite a countess's objections, and she has glass fitted into her pew to shut out his sermons? That stubborn act sits at the heart of My Lady Ludlow, a story of a Warwickshire village at the start of the nineteenth century.
Elizabeth Gaskell wrote it in the 1850s as the memory of an old woman, Margaret Dawson. Sent at sixteen to live with her cousin Lady Ludlow, Margaret is crippled by a hip injury and spends years on a sofa, watching and listening. You get a gallery of people and tales told by firelight.
Voor wie is het?. You will enjoy this if you like warm English village life, quiet humour, and strong women. It suits readers who love character studies and questions about class, kindness, and old customs meeting new ideas.

A poor clergyman's daughter enters a great house
Margaret Dawson, now an old woman, looks back on her youth at Hanbury Court. She promises no neat plot, only her memories of one remarkable lady. That loose, spoken manner sets the tone for all that follows.
Margaret is the eldest of nine children of a clergyman who has died. Lady Ludlow, a countess and widow, offers her a place among six young gentlewomen in her house. Margaret travels by coach and then in a gig driven by an old groom named Randal, who talks for a quarter of an hour about a fox hunt. At sunset she sees Hanbury Court, a red-brick house that was once a priory, with crooked chimneys and a vast Virginia creeper.
Lady Ludlow receives her in a lace cap nearly half her own height and kisses her on both cheeks. She notices the girl's cold hands and warms them in her own. Old rules still hold here, yet the welcome is real.
The story opens in a house where tenderness and ceremony share the same room.
