Juffrouw Billy — getrouwd in short
Miss Billy Married follows the first years of a young marriage and lets the comedy do the teaching. Billy and Bertram love each other completely, yet nearly every chapter shows two people reading each other wrongly. She tries to be an oak and a perfect housekeeper, always from a book or a warning, and every attempt tests what the marriage can bear.
What Juffrouw Billy — getrouwd is about
What happens after the wedding march fades? In this sequel to Miss Billy, Eleanor H. Porter follows a young bride into her first years of marriage, where love is certain and everything else is up for negotiation.
Billy Neilson has married Bertram Henshaw, a painter famous for his Face of a Girl. They move into the Strata, the old Beacon Street home he shares with his brother William, a collector of teapots. Billy plays beautifully, but she cannot cook or run a house. Porter wrote this warm, comic novel in 1914, and it gives you a dear cast of relatives and a dinner that goes wrong in nearly every way.
Voor wie is het?. Readers who love warm, funny stories about family life, newlywed muddles and big-hearted heroines. It suits anyone who enjoys gentle comedy and dear, odd relatives.

A hurried wedding and a sister's gloomy letter
The story begins at the wedding itself. Bertram and Billy marry at noon in her living room, with no bridesmaids, no cake and no veil. The family cook, Dong Ling, gives Billy a small green jade idol that he says will bring her good luck.
That evening Bertram's sister Kate writes to her husband. She thinks the couple are far too impulsive. She doubts Billy can cook, mend or manage a house, and she is sure marriage will ruin Bertram's art. Meanwhile William talks to the cat about his new home, and Aunt Hannah cries over a glove, sure that Billy no longer needs her.
On the night train, Billy tells her husband that their marriage will be different. Other couples drift into silence, she says, but they never will. Love is complete on page one, and the rest of the book asks what daily life will do to it.
A perfect start proves nothing, because the real test of a marriage is the ordinary days after the wedding.

Vragen over Juffrouw Billy — getrouwd
What is Miss Billy Married about?
It follows Billy Neilson and the painter Bertram Henshaw in the first years after their wedding. Billy tries to be a perfect wife, cook and mother, while Bertram's art, her friends and the family around them keep complicating things.
Do I need to read Miss Billy first?
The earlier books provide the background to Billy and Bertram's relationship before their wedding. But this novel opens at the wedding and quickly explains who everyone is, so a new reader can follow the story easily.
What is the Annex in Miss Billy Married?
The Annex is the Hillside house on Corey Hill that Billy keeps as an overflow place for her extra happiness. Aunt Hannah runs it, and Tommy Dunn and the Greggorys live there, so Billy can help people without charity.
What does the tiger skin mean in the book?
Arkwright tells it as a childhood story about a frightening rug that his uncle taught him to face. After that, a tiger skin stands for any fear or temptation that a person must walk up to and fight, not run from.
Is Miss Billy Married easy to read?
Yes, it reads easily. Chapters are short, the dialogue is lively, and most are built around a clear situation such as a dinner party, a quarrel or a visit. Porter's humor and warm tone keep the pages moving.
