Marcus Aurelius on love

Deze pagina is gebaseerd op onze boeksamenvattingen. De pagina is niet geschreven door Marcus Aurelius.

Marcus Aurelius’s views on love were not set out as a separate teaching in Meditations. His account of care for others, however, centered on cooperation and service to a shared community. He believed that human beings belonged together and should act for one another’s good. These ideas offered a way to understand love through conduct, rather than a definition of love itself. Governing anger and serving others mattered even when people were difficult or the work displaced personal comfort.

Gratitude gave care a personal shape

The first book of Meditations thanked the people who had shaped his character. Marcus remembered his grandfather’s calm temper, his mother’s plain living, and his teachers’ guidance. His attention to their gifts showed how deeply a life depended on other people.

Shared reason grounded human belonging

Marcus based human fellowship on the Stoic belief that rational beings shared one reason. He compared people to parts of a single body. Acting against another person therefore worked against the cooperation that he regarded as part of human nature.

Care required continued inner training

Meditations was a private notebook rather than a public declaration of virtue. Marcus repeatedly examined tiredness, anger, and difficult colleagues. These recurring concerns showed that serving others was not simply a settled belief; it required continued attention to his own habits and reactions.
