Maggie: een meisje van de straat in short

Maggie is the story of a girl who grows up in a tenement and tries to find something better. Crane begins with a child fighting in the street, follows the family home, and moves quickly through Jimmie's tough youth. Then he turns to Maggie, her work, her hopes and her trust in a man who talks big and gives little.

What Maggie: een meisje van de straat is about

What happens to a girl who grows up in a place where nobody is kind? Stephen Crane asks that question in Maggie, a short novel set in the slums of the Bowery in New York. It opens with a small boy standing on a heap of gravel, defending the honor of his street with stones.

Crane was a young newspaper man who knew the tenements from his own walks, and in 1893 he first had the book printed himself under the false name Johnston Smith. It follows three children of the Johnson family, Jimmie, Maggie and the baby Tommie. Crane does not tell you what to feel. He puts the scenes in front of you and lets the facts do the work.

Voor wie is het?. This book is for readers who like short, sharp novels, stories of big cities and the people they overlook, and writers who show life plainly. It suits those who care about fairness, family and what a place does to a person.

A boy fights for Rum Alley

The book opens in the middle of a battle. A very small boy named Jimmie stands on a heap of gravel, hurling stones at children from a rival street called Devil's Row. His face is white with fury and his mouth is full of curses far too big for his size.

A stone smashes into his mouth and blood runs over his chin. His coat is torn to shreds, his hat is gone and his thin legs begin to shake. Grown people watch from a window and a river dock, and none of them steps in. Then Pete, a sixteen-year-old with a cigar stub in his teeth and a permanent sneer, strikes one attacker and the rest run off. Jimmie wipes his bloody face and tells Pete how the other children attacked him. Remember that name, because it will matter later.

Once the enemy is gone, the Rum Alley children exaggerate their courage and explain away their retreats. Then Jimmie turns on one of his own side, a boy called Blue Billie, and the two roll on the cobblestones. Violence here is how these children talk to each other. Jimmie's father trudges up with a dinner pail, kicks the tangle of boys and orders his son home. The little soldier follows, cursing and ashamed.

The street teaches a child to fight before it teaches anything else.

Vragen over Maggie: een meisje van de straat

What is Maggie: A Girl of the Streets about?

It follows Maggie Johnson, who grows up in a violent tenement home in New York's Bowery. She works in a factory, falls for a bartender named Pete, and faces rejection from him and her family when she needs help.

Is Maggie: A Girl of the Streets a true story?

It is fiction, but it draws on what Crane saw of slum life in New York as a young reporter. He had the book printed in 1893, and it was one of the first American novels to depict tenement life plainly.

Who is Pete in Maggie?

Pete is a young bartender with a sneer and a love of boasting. He first appears as a teenager who helps Jimmie in a street fight, and later he becomes the man Maggie admires.

Is Maggie: A Girl of the Streets easy to read?

Yes, it is short, with brief chapters that read like scenes. The dialogue is written as people speak, which sounds natural aloud, and Crane's images are clear and vivid, so the story moves along quickly.

What is the main message of Maggie?

Crane argues that people are shaped by the places they grow up in. He also shows how neighbours, family and church judge a girl harshly while offering her little real help.
