Graduation day brings a mystery and a pearl
Madge Morton's story opens on the morning of commencement at Miss Tolliver's school. She must give the valedictory, and she hates it, because her best friend Phyllis Alden earned exactly the same average. Phil settles their near quarrel with one question: would Madge have been glad if the honor had gone to her?
Then a boy delivers a small box covered in tiny shells. Inside, on a bed of cotton, lies a single unset pearl, and there is no card. Madge hides it under her pillow and goes to the stage. Stage fright takes her voice away, but she lifts her head, smiles, and speaks clearly about friendship.
Near the end, a hoarse voice shouts her name from the back. Madge leans out to look, and the great arch of flowers, with a heavy bell on it, crashes down behind her. Phil springs forward and takes the blow on her own forehead. Nobody can say who called out, and the pearl's sender stays unknown too.
Real friendship is glad when the other friend wins.

He was the voice that called her name at commencement and sent the pearl. Philip Holt is caught, the treasure is returned and Tania recovers under Mrs. Curtis's care. Madge sails around the world with both men on the yacht Little Captain, promising to return for Miss Jenny Ann's wedding.
