Liefde te wapen in short
Love-at-Arms follows a count who will not wear a crown and cannot stop being a champion. After the offer of the throne, a night ambush and a meeting in a forest, he is tied to a princess who will not marry the duke chosen for her. A tyrant's cruelty banishes him, and a vain poet's plot sends them all to the walls of Roccaleone.
What Liefde te wapen is about
What would you do if a crown were offered to you in a goatherd's hut, and all you wanted was to ride away? That is how Love-at-Arms begins. Six nobles of Babbiano wait by a smoky lamp for the Count of Aquila, the best soldier in Italy. They ask him to take the throne from his cousin, a duke who feasts and hawks while Caesar Borgia's expanding power threatens Babbiano.
Rafael Sabatini, master of swashbuckling romance, sets this novel in Renaissance Italy. You get ambushes, a tortured jester, a rebel princess and a castle under siege.
Voor wie is het?. You will love this book if you enjoy gallant knights, witty banter, castle sieges and court romance, and if you like heroes who win by nerve and humor as much as by the sword.

A crown is offered and refused
The story opens at nightfall in a goatherd's hut above the river Metauro. Six nobles stand with bowed heads as the Angelus rings in the valley. Then a tall man in plain clothes steps in. He is Francesco del Falco, Count of Aquila, and he looks like a mercenary in peacetime.
Old Fabrizio makes the case. Duke Gian Maria wastes his days on orgies and hawking and answers every warning with threats. Caesar Borgia spreads across Italy like a plague and means to devour it leaf by leaf, like an artichoke. So the nobles offer the Count the crown in the name of the people, with twenty spears to ride with him.
Francesco feels the temptation for a moment. Then he sees the cost. He would trade his freedom for a palace and become a puppet of the men who put him there. He loves roaming the world too much to be shut in by court perfume.
He offers a lesser gift. He will ask Gian Maria for the post of gonfalonier, the military chief of the state. After the nobles try again to persuade him, young Fanfulla hears marching feet outside. The meeting is betrayed.
A man who could have power chooses to stay free, and the world keeps pressing power back on him.
