Preaching of Peter in short

The Preaching of Peter is an early Christian sermon known from quotations by Clement of Alexandria and from the notice of Origen and Eusebius. Its argument runs in clear steps. One uncreated God needs nothing and made everything by the word of his power.

What Preaching of Peter is about

What would you hear if you stood in a house church in Alexandria around the year 200 and listened to a sermon said to come from Peter? You would hear short, bold claims. There is one God, who made everything and needs nothing. The Greeks and the Jews both miss him. Christians worship him in a new way.

That sermon is the Preaching of Peter, the Kerygma Petrou. No one knows who wrote it, and it survives only in quotations. You get its surviving passages in turn, and a way to read them with fairness.

Voor wie is het?. You will love this if you enjoy early church history, curious voices from the first Christian centuries, or short ancient texts that open big questions about God and worship.

The sermon survives only in quotations

The Preaching of Peter is an early Christian work that now exists only in scattered quotations. No complete copy came down through the great manuscript traditions. What readers have are passages that other writers copied into their own books, and those passages are enough to show the shape of an argument.

The main source is Clement of Alexandria. In his Stromata he cites the work several times and treats it as a genuine apostolic voice. Origen also discussed it and questioned whether it was authentic. That doubt is itself a clue, because no one stops to question a book that nobody reads. Eusebius knew of it too, and by his day opinion was turning against it.

The work never found a place among the twenty-seven books of the New Testament. Its fate was a quiet fading, not a ban. Later copyists did not carry it forward.

Who wrote it? The sermon presents itself as the preaching of Peter. Most modern scholars think Peter did not compose it, because of its learned style and some ideas that seem later. Many still think it may carry memories of Petrine teaching.

Because only pieces remain, every conclusion is held loosely. The best way to read them is with historical empathy, asking what these words did for the people who first heard them. The sermon lives on because others thought it worth quoting.

Vragen over Preaching of Peter

What is the Preaching of Peter about?

It is an early Christian sermon presented as the preaching of Peter. It declares one uncreated God, criticizes Greek and Jewish worship, calls Christians a new people, tells of the apostles being sent to all nations, and says the prophets named Christ.

Who wrote the Preaching of Peter?

The author is unknown. The text claims to be Peter's preaching, and Clement of Alexandria took it as apostolic. Most modern scholars doubt that Peter wrote it, but many think it may preserve traditions from communities that traced their origins to him.

Why is the Preaching of Peter not in the Bible?

It never gained a place in the New Testament, which was gathered over centuries. Origen questioned its authenticity, and later opinion turned away from it. It also faded because no complete copy was passed down, and only quotations remain.

What does the Kerygma Petrou mean?

Kerygma Petrou is the Greek title, and it means the proclamation or preaching of Peter. The Greek word kerygma refers to the message a herald announces, and early Christians used it for the core message preached about Jesus.

Is the Preaching of Peter a complete book?

No. It survives only in fragments quoted by early writers, above all Clement of Alexandria in his Stromata. Because of this, its short passages are taken one by one, and scholars read them with care about what they can and cannot show.
