The Didache in short

The Didache is a small rule book for a young church. An unknown hand wrote it in Greek in the late first or early second century, and then it vanished for about a thousand years. A single complete copy from 1056 came to light in 1873.

What The Didache is about

Picture a church with no New Testament on the shelf, no creed to recite and no fixed order of service. A new believer asks plain questions. How should I pray? When should I fast? How do I baptize? Whom can I trust when a stranger arrives claiming to speak for God?

A short Greek manual from the early church answers each one in practical terms. It is the Didache, a word that means teaching, written by an unknown hand in the late first or early second century. It lay lost for centuries until one copy came to light in 1873. In its pages you hear the earliest believers settle how to live, pray, give and wait.

Voor wie is het?. You will love this if you enjoy early church history, original sources and the daily habits of ancient communities. It suits readers of the Bible and anyone curious how the first Christians prayed, ate, gave and chose leaders.

A lost manual surfaces after centuries of silence

The Didache is a church manual that dropped out of sight for roughly a thousand years. Early writers knew of it. Some quoted it, and in the fourth century Eusebius of Caesarea placed it among books that were disputed. After that it faded from view.

The recovery began in a library in Constantinople. There Philotheos Bryennios, a Greek Orthodox metropolitan, examined a volume known today as the Codex Hierosolymitanus, copied in 1056. Among its works lay the complete Greek text. He published it in 1883, and scholars at once began to rewrite what they knew about early Christian worship.

The title in the manuscript claims the weight of the twelve apostles and speaks to non-Jewish converts in one breath. Most scholars do not think the twelve wrote it. They see an unknown teacher or a small circle gathering the customs of a real community.

Why does it stand outside most Bibles? The reasons are historical. Church leaders weighed books by their apostolic origin, their wide use and their fit with the larger churches. Its exclusion belongs to a broader history of choices shaped by theology, authority, geography and the survival of manuscripts. Yet it left its mark on later church orders. For you, it is a rare window onto a community making things up as it goes.

A book can be set aside by the canon and still tell the truth about how people lived.

Vragen over The Didache

What is the Didache about?

It is a short early Christian manual on how to live and worship. It covers the two ways of life and death, baptism, fasting, the Lord's Prayer, meal prayers, testing prophets, choosing leaders, and readiness for the Lord's return.

When was the Didache written and who wrote it?

The author is unknown. Scholars date it between the late first century and the early second, though some think older material lies inside it. It was written in Greek, and many place it in Syria or nearby.

Why is the Didache not in the Bible?

Church leaders judged books by apostolic origin, wide use and agreement with wider church belief. This community manual remained outside the canon, though early writers mentioned or quoted it and Eusebius listed it among disputed books.

How was the Didache rediscovered?

The Greek Orthodox metropolitan Philotheos Bryennios found a complete copy in a manuscript from 1056 in a library in Constantinople in 1873. He published it in 1883, and scholars have studied it closely since.

Is the Didache easy to read?

It is made of short, clear chapters with direct instructions and short prayers. Its chapters give compact instructions on subjects such as baptism, visiting prophets and community discipline, making the manual easy to follow.
