Lillians gelofte in short

Lillian's Vow follows one young woman across a city of money and secrets. Lillian Leigh loses her father to a stranger's hands and promises that his killer will be found. The search brings her into the Raleigh mansion, where a ghost paints an unfinished panel, a family fears ruin, and a society wife is hunted for a love she was told was lost.

What Lillians gelofte is about

Picture a quiet city street at one in the morning, in winter, with an electric light flickering overhead. An old accountant is gripped by the throat while a stranger in a low felt hat demands a leather memorandum book. When help arrives, the body is carried home, where his daughter kneels beside him and declares that his murderer will be found.

Lillian's Vow is a Victorian mystery by Mrs. E. Burke Collins. It follows Lillian Leigh, a young typist alone in the world, into the mansion of the millionaire Raleigh family. There she meets a ghost that paints an unfinished panel, a senator's wife with a hidden past, and a family that fears ruin.

Voor wie is het?. This is for readers who love a mystery with a ghost in it, a heroine with a promise to keep, a newspaper man in love, and grand Victorian scenes full of secrets.

The story in 10 parts

A stolen book and a dead accountant

The book opens in the dark, with a cry for help on a quiet street. An old white-haired man named Gilbert Leigh struggles in the grip of a powerful attacker in a broad-brimmed felt hat. The attacker demands a leather memorandum book. Then the old man whispers a few words in his ear, and a thief becomes a killer.

A young journalist named Jack Lyndon knocks the attacker down with a single blow. The electric light goes out, and when it flares up again the man has gone and the old man lies still. The book is missing from his overcoat. A policeman says Leigh was an expert accountant who quietly watched the clerks at the firm of Raleigh and Raleigh.

His daughter comes flying down the stairs in a white robe, her golden hair loose, and kneels beside the sofa. Then she sees the purple marks on his throat and understands that he has been murdered.

A stolen book and a dead accountant are the seeds of the whole plot.
