In Chapter 2, the narrator examines the Thénardiers, exposing the husband's control beneath his wife's noisy strength and describing their dishonest approach to running an inn. Their contrasting forms of cruelty combine against Cosette, whose exhausting labor, beatings, and bare feet reveal the household's oppression.
Wat er gebeurt
- Madame Thénardier appears physically powerful, loud, hardworking, and brutal toward Cosette.
- Thénardier presents himself as learned and heroic, while the narrator describes his cunning, theft, and exaggerated military claims.
- Despite his frail appearance, Thénardier controls his wife, who obeys him and refuses to criticize him publicly.
