In Chapter 4, Arthur learns that Sir Ector is his foster father, promises Sir Kay a lasting office, and repeatedly draws the sword when others cannot. The barons resist accepting him as king and postpone their decision, while Merlin guides arrangements for trusted knights to stay around Arthur.
Wat er gebeurt
- Sir Kay cannot move the sword, but Arthur draws it easily, prompting Sir Ector and Sir Kay to kneel.
- Sir Ector explains Arthur’s upbringing, and Arthur grieves that the man who raises him is not his father.
- Arthur promises to make Sir Kay seneschal for as long as both of them live.
- Arthur alone draws the sword before the barons on Twelfth Day, but their objections delay the decision until Candlemas.
- Arthur succeeds again at Candlemas and Easter, yet resistant lords postpone the matter until Pentecost.
- Under Merlin’s guidance, the archbishop gathers trusted knights who remain around Arthur until Pentecost.
