Layamons Brut in short

Layamon's Brut tells the story of a land as a family chronicle. It begins with Trojan exiles and a prince who kills his father by accident, and follows his people to Albion, where they defeat giants. Kings rise and fall through pride, lust, loyalty and betrayal.

What Layamons Brut is about

What if a village priest decided to write down the whole past of his island, from the fall of Troy to the days of the English? That is what Layamon did.

The Brut is a chronicle in lively English verse, written around the turn of the thirteenth century. Layamon laid three books side by side: Bede's English history, a Latin book by Albin and Austin, and the French poem of Wace. Then he joined them into one. You get kings, battles, betrayals and prophecies, told in a bold voice that loves feasts, horns and fighting.

Voor wie is het?. For readers who love the legends behind Arthur, Merlin and King Leir, enjoy old chronicles full of battles and omens, or like hearing how places got their names.

A priest joins three books into one

Layamon opens by naming himself. He is a priest, the son of Leovenath, living at Ernley beside a church on the Severn. He aims to tell of the English people's great deeds, their origins and the names they bore.

He takes the English book of Saint Bede, then the Latin book of Albin and Austin. The third is the French book of the clerk Wace, which Wace gave to Queen Eleanor. Layamon writes the true words together on parchment.

Then he asks every good reader to say a prayer for his father, his mother and his own soul. The narrator will often step in to praise heroes and curse traitors.

The Brut is one man's loving union of three older books, offered to the reader with a prayer.

Vragen over Layamons Brut

What is Layamon's Brut about?

It is a verse chronicle of Britain's past. It starts with Troy and Brutus, follows kings such as Leir, Belin and Vortiger, includes Merlin and Arthur, and ends with the English taking the land.

Who was Layamon?

Layamon was a priest who lived at Ernley beside a church on the Severn. He says he gathered books by Bede, Albin and Wace, then joined them into one English poem.

Is the Brut a true history?

It mixes remembered tradition with legend. The poet follows earlier books and treats Brutus, Arthur and Merlin as part of the past, so it is best read as a medieval chronicle, not a modern history.

What sources did Layamon use?

He names the English history of Bede, a Latin book by Albin and Austin, and the French book of Wace given to Queen Eleanor. He says he joined the three into one.

Why is the Brut worth reading?

It is an early English telling of Arthur and Leir, with lively battles, feasts, omens and speeches. It also shows how a medieval writer explained place names, kingship and the clash of peoples.
