Kate Coventry in short
Kate Coventry is the story of a high-spirited young woman who loves horses, hunting, and the open air. Her aunts want her proper, her cousin John wants her kind, and a handsome captain wants her attention. Over one year she moves from Ascot and the London ball to Dangerfield Hall and Scamperley.
What Kate Coventry is about
What would you do if everyone told you a young woman must not race a man on horseback, and you had already beaten him down Rotten Row? Kate Coventry does it, and then tells you all about it with a grin.
G. J. Whyte-Melville, who knew the hunting field and the London season well, wrote this comic novel as a memoir. Kate loves horses far more than needlework. Her aunts want her proper, her cousin John wants her kind, and a handsome captain named Frank Lovell wants something harder to name. You follow her from Lowndes Street to the dark corridors of Scamperley, and you hear her argue what women may do.
Voor wie is het?. If you enjoy a witty heroine who talks straight to the reader, horses and hunting, London society comedy, or a love story full of mix-ups, Kate is a lively companion.

Kate and Aunt Deborah live by different rules
The story opens on a rainy June morning in London. Aunt Deborah tells Kate that the trip to Ascot must be given up, and Kate swallows her tears.
Aunt Deborah is tall and stern, in gray silk and lavender kid gloves, because the Horsingham family prides itself on its white hands. Their quarrel is always about what she calls propriety. Kate raced Bob Dashwood down Rotten Row and won, and Aunt Deborah calls that unfeminine.
Then there is Cousin John Jones, stout, good humored, and always ready for a lark. Aunt Deborah is secretly fond of him, so he can talk her into almost anything, even Ascot. Kate wants freedom, Aunt Deborah wants rules, and John stands in the middle.
Kate's high spirits are not a flaw to be cured, they are her way of seeing the world.
