Joe Strong, de Visjongen in short

Joe Strong, the Boy Fish follows one circus season from opening day onward. A friend named Benny Turton falls ill in his glass tank, and a trapeze artist steps into his place. Joe dresses the act with goldfish, adds a sea lion named Lizzie, and uses an idea from Helen Morton to keep them together.

What Joe Strong, de Visjongen is about

What would you do if your friend sank to the bottom of a glass tank in front of a packed circus tent, and nobody in the crowd had noticed? Joe Strong has only seconds to decide.

Joe Strong, the Boy Fish is a circus adventure by Vance Barnum, about a young performer with the Sampson Brothers Circus. You meet a trapeze star, a girl with a trick horse, a kindly ringmaster, a runaway lion and a sea lion named Lizzie. You also get a quiet question about why Joe says he cannot afford a coat, a supper or a treat.

Voor wie is het?. You will enjoy this if you love circus tents, trapeze flights and trained animals, or if you like a clean adventure about a brave, inventive young hero.

Opening day brings a friend to danger

The book opens on the first show of the season for the Sampson Brothers Circus. Drums boom, elephants trumpet and a huge crowd fills the tent. Backstage, Joe Strong, a lean young man with strong arms, gets ready for his daring act on the high bars.

Near the dressing tent he meets Helen Morton, who rides a trick horse named Rosebud, and Benny Turton, a frail young man in a green suit made to look like fish scales. Benny dives into a glass tank and stays underwater for minutes. Today he looks tired and mentions a pain at the back of his head. He insists he must go on.

Joe watches the act and sees agony cross Benny's face underwater. The crowd sees nothing wrong. A shout could start a panic, so Joe whispers to a clown named Bill Watson and brings in the ringmaster, Jim Tracy.

Joe grabs an elephant goad, a long hooked pole, and lifts Benny to the surface by the fish suit. Clowns carry the stretcher off as if it were a comic bit. A doctor says Benny will live but needs a hospital.

Quick thinking and calm nerves save a life when the crowd must never know.

Vragen over Joe Strong, de Visjongen

What is Joe Strong, the Boy Fish about?

It follows Joe Strong, a young trapeze artist, during one circus season. When a friend falls ill in the glass tank, Joe takes over the underwater act and keeps building new tricks with goldfish and a sea lion.

Who is Benny Turton in the story?

Benny is the gentle human fish of the Sampson Brothers Circus. He holds his breath in a glass tank, falls ill on opening day, and his need for care shapes Joe's choices throughout the book.

Do I need to read the earlier Joe Strong books first?

No. Chapter two gives a short account of the first two books, so new readers learn about Joe's past as a magician and trapeze artist, and the story then stands on its own.

What is the difference between a seal and a sea lion in the book?

Lizzie's owner explains that she is really a sea lion. Sea lions have long necks and flat front flippers without hair, while true seals have short necks and clawed flippers, so sea lions move more actively.

What is the main message of the book?

Courage, invention and loyalty go together. Joe works hard, tests his ideas carefully, helps a friend in secret and learns that the people around him judge too quickly when they cannot see his reasons.
