Japanse sprookjes in short

Japanese Fairy Tales gathers thirty-eight stories of many kinds into one book. Myths tell how the islands, the sun and the world of the dead came to be. Folk tales give you clever kettles, a peach boy and a wishing mallet.

What Japanse sprookjes is about

A samurai rides through a typhoon with a message from his lord. He has been told never to look a maiden in the eyes. At a lonely cottage under three green willows, a girl pours his wine, and their eyes meet.

That moment opens Japanese Fairy Tales. Grace James gathered thirty-eight tales, some from the Ko-ji-ki, the Record of Ancient Matters, and some she first heard as a child. A talking tea kettle, a goddess in a cave, ghosts, foxes and dragons all wait inside.

Voor wie is het?. Readers who love myths, ghost stories and bedtime tales will find a home here, along with anyone curious about Japanese gods, spirits and samurai. It suits families who read aloud.

The story in 10 parts

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

One glance can outweigh a lord's command

The book opens with Tomodata, a young samurai who serves the Lord of Noto. He is a soldier, a poet and a graceful dancer. His lord gives him an urgent mission and a strict order. Ride hard, fear nothing, and never look a maiden in the eyes.

An autumn typhoon breaks over him, and he loses his road. He finds a thatched cottage on a hill with three green willows in front. The old couple give him dry clothes and hot rice wine. Their daughter, the Green Willow, kneels to pour his wine, their eyes meet, and the warning of his lord vanishes from his mind.

He rides away in the morning, full of sadness, then finds her lying at the threshold of the shrine where he slept. He takes her up on his horse, and they ride on together, forgetting honor and duty. The tale leaves you to feel what was set aside.

Love can overrule even the strongest promise, and the book counts the cost.
