Who Rebecca is

Rebecca brings intelligence, compassion, and skill in healing to a country divided by power and religious prejudice. Her care for the wounded Ivanhoe places her near the centre of the action. Although she helps him, the barriers of faith and society between them remain strong.

Rebecca and the others in the story

Her father, Isaac of York, is a Jewish moneylender whose wealth makes him useful to knights and nobles. That dependence does not protect him from hatred or violence, and Rebecca also faces distrust because of her faith.

Brian de Bois-Guilbert, a powerful Templar knight, makes Rebecca's position especially dangerous. His desire for her clashes with his religious vows and ambitions, exposing her to coercion.

How Rebecca changes

As the action moves from tournament grounds to captivity and a besieged castle, Rebecca faces threats beyond religious distrust. Her courage tests the limits of chivalry, setting genuine moral judgment against the honour that powerful men proclaim.
