Israël Potter in short
Israel Potter follows a real Revolutionary soldier from the Berkshire hills to a life far from home. A farm boy fights at Bunker Hill, is captured, and escapes across England in disguise. He carries secrets for Franklin, is walled in a hidden cell, is pressed into the British navy, and then joins Paul Jones for raids and a famous sea battle.
What Israël Potter is about
What happens to a farm boy from the Berkshire hills who fires on British grenadiers at Bunker Hill, and then spends half a century trying to get home? In Israel Potter, Herman Melville follows one real soldier through prisons, chases, secret errands and sea battles. Along the way you meet a king in his garden, Benjamin Franklin with his practical advice, and the fierce captain Paul Jones.
It rests on a small pamphlet in which the real Potter told his story. You get a fast, funny and sometimes grim tale that asks what a country owes the ordinary man who fights for it.
Voor wie is het?. You will enjoy this if you like adventure with a historical backbone, sea battles, daring escapes, comic meetings with famous men, and thoughtful American storytelling from the author of Moby-Dick.

A hill boy leaves home and learns the world
Melville opens with the land, not the man. Eastern Berkshire is high, rocky and lonely, with stone walls built on soil that gave little back. He says no place could suit better as the birthplace of Israel Potter, whose name foretells a long wandering.
At eighteen Israel loves a neighbor's daughter, but his father opposes the match. One July Sunday, while the family is at church, Israel hides a bundle in the woods. He slips out after dark and walks north and west at dawn.
His next years are a catalogue of frontier trades. He chains for surveyors, hunts deer and beaver, and trades with Native people in Canada. Hunting makes him a marksman. Later he goes to sea and becomes a harpooner. When he walks back to the hills, his sweetheart belongs to another man.
The farm boy's wandering builds the hunter, the sailor and the patient man the war is about to use.

How it ends (spoiler)
Israel remains in London for decades, working at low trades and raising a family in poverty, until 1826, when his son wins him passage to Boston. He arrives on the Fourth of July, amid patriotic celebrations that include a banner honoring Bunker Hill. His family home has burned and his kin are gone, and he cannot win the pension he has earned. He dictates a small book of his life, which soon disappears. He dies unknown, on the day the oldest oak on his native hills is blown down.

Vragen over Israël Potter
What is Israel Potter about?
It follows a Berkshire farm boy who fights at Bunker Hill, is captured, flees through England, runs secret errands for Franklin, and sails with Paul Jones. Behind the action it asks what a nation owes its common soldiers.
Is Israel Potter a true story?
It is based on the real Israel Potter, whose small printed narrative Melville used as his starting point. Melville added history, dialogue and scenes of his own, so it is historical fiction built on a real life.
Why did Melville dedicate the book to the Bunker Hill Monument?
The joke has a serious edge. The monument honors the nameless soldiers of Bunker Hill, and Melville uses it to point out that Israel Potter, a private there, was never properly honored by the nation he served.
Which famous people appear in Israel Potter?
Benjamin Franklin, John Paul Jones, George the Third, Ethan Allen and Horne Tooke all appear. Each gets a vivid scene, and Franklin and Jones in particular play large roles beside Israel.
Is Israel Potter easy to read?
Its short chapters, lively dialogue and quick scenes make it approachable. Chases, escapes, a haunted wall and a sea battle keep the story moving, and Melville's humor brightens even the darker moments.
