Wat er gebeurt

1. Bernardus describes his mother’s devotion, his priesthood, and his retreat into religious study at Saint Paul.
2. A dream announces his confessor’s death, and a vision of his mother persuades him to remain in the cloister.
3. As a professor in Klagenfurt, he reads the Pope’s book and rejects papal infallibility.
4. He interprets reports of a star and meteor as divine encouragement, vows to travel to America, and prepares to leave.
5. Bernardus departs confidently, but Flemming regards him with pity; Flemming and Berkley return to Saint Gilgen and exchange farewells.
6. The widow’s child dies that night, while Flemming watches nearby lights and shadows without understanding their cause.
