Hermann en Dorothea in short
Hermann and Dorothea tells of one afternoon and evening in a German town while refugees from the Revolution wars pass by. A father is proud of his rebuilt town and wants his son to marry money. A mother trusts her son's heart.
What Hermann en Dorothea is about
What would you do if a line of exiles passed your town and you had a carriage full of food and linen? A shy young man does exactly this in the first pages of Hermann and Dorothea, and the choice changes his life.
It is set in a small German town near the Rhine, in the years when the French Revolution drove whole villages from their homes. At the center are an innkeeper's family, a pastor, a doctor, and one young woman met on a dusty road.
Voor wie is het?. You will love this poem if you enjoy family stories, gentle romance and thoughtful friends trading views, or if you wonder how the Revolution felt to ordinary German townspeople.

A town empties to watch the exiles
The poem opens in the market square of a prosperous town, and it is almost empty. Nearly everyone has hurried out along the dusty road to see a train of refugees, driven from the far side of the Rhine by war. The innkeeper of the Golden Lion sits on his porch with his wife and remarks on the quiet.
Soon the pastor and the doctor join them. The doctor scolds the crowds for staring at other people's misfortune. The pastor answers more gently. Curiosity, he says, leads people from what is new to what is useful and finally to what is good.
The doctor describes the road. Wagons overloaded with sieves, beds and birdcages crawl along in confusion. Danger makes a person grab what is worthless and leave what is precious behind.
The innkeeper trusts that God and the river will keep the French away. Then he voices a worry about his son Hermann, who avoids girls and will not dance. As the friends drink old wine in the cool back room, hoofbeats and wheels sound under the gateway.
The takeaway is that a safe town learns its character the day trouble walks through the gate.

How it ends (spoiler)
Hermann leads Dorothea into his parents' parlor. She believes she has come as a servant, and a joke from the father wounds her. In tears she confesses her love and prepares to leave. Hermann then says he came to the fountain to win her heart, not to hire her. The pastor betroths them with the parents' rings. Dorothea shares her fear of loss, and Hermann answers with a vow of steadfast courage.

Vragen over Hermann en Dorothea
What is Hermann and Dorothea about?
It follows an innkeeper's shy son who gives gifts to war refugees, falls for a young woman among them, and must win over his proud father. It sets a gentle love story against the wars that followed the French Revolution.
When did Goethe write Hermann and Dorothea and is it a true story?
Goethe published it in 1797. The characters are invented, but the setting is real in spirit. Refugees fleeing Revolution-era wars along the Rhine were a common sight in those years.
Why are the nine songs named after Muses?
Each song carries the name of a Greek Muse, such as Calliope, Clio and Urania. Goethe used the classical frame to give a small-town story the dignity of an ancient epic.
Who are the main characters in Hermann and Dorothea?
Hermann is the innkeeper's son and Dorothea the refugee he meets. Around them are his father, his mother, the pastor, the doctor, and an elder who leads the exiles as a magistrate.
Is Hermann and Dorothea easy to read?
Its story is clear and its scenes are short, with lively conversation, humor and a friendly narrator. The characters speak plainly, so a reader can follow the events and feelings without any special background.
