A proud old family is ruined by vanity
The Armines came to England with William the Conqueror, and for centuries their name sits in the history books. They lose heads and lands whenever they back the wrong side. By the time of the story, little is left but a famous name and a mountain of debt.
The man who spends the last of the fortune is Sir Ferdinand, a brilliant adventurer who needs to astonish the world. He wastes a huge sum on claims to old titles he cannot win. He ends on the guillotine in Paris, leaving behind a castle that is only half built.
His son, Sir Ratcliffe, is grave, proud and honest. He refuses to sell a single acre even though selling would clear every debt. He and his wife settle in the one old fragment of Armine Place that still has a roof, among wild gardens of cedars and a lake where swans glide.
A family's past can press on a young life long before he makes a single choice of his own.
