Economische harmonieën in short

Bastiat's argument fits together simply. People have wants and make efforts to meet them. Effort is exchanged, and the ratio of exchanged services is value.

What Economische harmonieën is about

What if candlemakers asked the government to close every window in France, because the Sun sells light too cheaply? Frédéric Bastiat wrote that petition as a joke with a point. It shows how a nation can mistake scarcity for wealth and call the mistake patriotism.

Harmonies of Political Economy is his longer answer. Bastiat was a French economist and a deputy in the National Assembly. His reply is bold: human interests, left free, fit together.

Voor wie is het?. For readers who like a clear argument about money, markets and fairness, enjoy lively parables, and want to see how a nineteenth century thinker answered the socialists.

The 10 key ideas

Society already runs on hidden natural laws

Bastiat asks whether society has laws of its own or is only a crowd waiting for a genius to arrange it. The answer decides whether political economy can be a science at all. If society follows general laws, those laws can be studied.

His evidence is a village carpenter. He wears cloth made from American cotton, Indian indigo and French wool. Bastiat claims this one man consumes in a day more than he could produce alone in ten centuries. Nobody robbed anybody to make it happen. Each helper was paid with services given in return.

How could anyone found a new society to replace this one? Bastiat sees only force, persuasion and deception, and each fails. Society is a working order that nobody designed, so study it before you try to replace it.

Vragen over Economische harmonieën

What is Harmonies of Political Economy about?

It argues that when people are free to work and exchange, their interests fit together instead of clashing. Bastiat explains value, capital, property, land rent, competition and the proper limits of government to show that economic laws serve everyone.

What is the candlemakers petition?

It is a satirical petition in which candle producers ask the French Chamber of Deputies to block all windows, because the Sun competes unfairly by giving light for nothing. It mocks the logic of tariffs and protection.

What does Bastiat mean by value?

For Bastiat, value is not hidden inside objects. It is the relation between two services that people exchange. Nature's gifts have usefulness but no value, since nobody must be paid for them, only for the effort of gathering them.

Was the book finished and when was it written?

Bastiat wrote the first volume in 1850 and meant to add a second, but illness stopped him. He died in Rome that year. The work is a rich sketch, and it also carries pieces such as the broken window and the candlemakers petition.

Is Harmonies of Political Economy worth reading today?

It is worth reading for its lively parables and its clear questions about who gains from tariffs, subsidies and state schemes. Readers meet the carpenter, the water carrier and Jonathan, and they take away a habit of looking for hidden costs.
