Grote piratenverhalen in short

Great Pirate Stories gathers voices from many centuries, and together they form one picture. The sea robber works best by disguise, speed and surprise, whether a schooner dressed as a trader, a proa in the night or a warship rowed out of Algiers. You see these tactics from the victim's side, the raider's and the prisoner's.

What Grote piratenverhalen is about

Picture a dark night at sea. A schooner shows no light, and her crew crouches behind a boat on deck. A British cutter sends her jolly boat across the water, and the officer in it has no idea what waits for him.

That scene comes early in Great Pirate Stories, an anthology gathered by Joseph Lewis French. It joins fiction by Michael Scott, James Fenimore Cooper and Daniel Defoe with eyewitness accounts of raids, captures and trials. You see pirates from both sides of the cannon, across four centuries.

Voor wie is het?. You will enjoy this book if you love sea adventure, true accounts of raids and escapes, and the odd customs of pirate crews. It suits listeners who like many voices.

The 10 key ideas

A pirate schooner springs a trap on a cutter

The collection opens with The Piccaroon by Michael Scott. Young Tom Cringle and his lieutenant, Mr. Splinter, are stranded at Carthagena with no ship home. A pilot named Peter Mangrove offers a passage and asks only that they put no questions to the crew.

The vessel is a low schooner dressed like a trader. Yet her copper shines, and her men wear red sashes and long knives. Soon twelve carronades rise from the hold. When the king's cutter Spark appears in the dark, the mate gives a false name and waits. The cutter sends her boat, and her young officer is seized the moment he climbs aboard.

The broadside comes, the ships lock, and Tom and Splinter crawl along a fallen boom to the cutter. A ship that looks honest never needs to fight fairly. Be careful whom you trust by appearances.

Vragen over Grote piratenverhalen

What is Great Pirate Stories about?

It is an anthology of pirate tales and true accounts, edited by Joseph Lewis French. The pieces cover raids, captures, escapes, trials and pirate customs across the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean, the China Sea and the North Atlantic.

Who wrote the stories in Great Pirate Stories?

Joseph Lewis French edited the book. The pieces come from many writers, including Michael Scott, James Fenimore Cooper, Daniel Defoe, John Esquemeling, Samuel Purchas, Howard Pyle, Richard Glasspoole, Lucretia Parker, Arthur Hunt Chute and W. B. Lord.

Are the pirate stories in this book true?

The book mixes fiction and fact. Scott, Cooper and Defoe write tales. Esquemeling, Pyle, Purchas, Glasspoole and others report real captures, raids and trials, and Chute's piece is a sea legend told as folklore.

Who are the best-known pirates in Great Pirate Stories?

Captain Henry Morgan, Blackbeard (Edward Teach), Captain William Kid, Bartholomew Roberts and Barbarossa appear in detail. Lolonois, Jaddi and Mogul Mackenzie also have their own pieces, and Ching Yih's Chinese fleet is described.

Is Great Pirate Stories easy to follow?

Yes, in the sense that each piece stands alone with its own scene and cast. The accounts are short and vivid, with clear dates, names and places, so you can start anywhere and still follow the action.
