Het fortuin van Frances Kane in short
These three tales tell of ordinary people who meet a heavy demand and answer it with a steady heart. Frances Kane gives up her freedom and her love to save her father's house. A young Frenchman learns, in a dark cell, to live by the faith his tutor kept.
What Het fortuin van Frances Kane is about
Frances Kane is twenty-eight, walks bareheaded in the June sun, and counts the peaches and pears she means to sell. Her father, the squire of an old house in northern England called the Firs, tells her she was never young. A letter from Australia has already arrived.
This volume opens with Frances Kane's Fortune, a story of duty and love by L. T. Meade. It follows a woman who keeps a failing estate alive and must choose between her father's comfort and the man she has loved for ten years. Two shorter tales follow: a young nobleman befriends a toad in a Paris prison, and a frightened boy fears a murdered horseman in Yew Lane.
Voor wie is het?. Readers who love warm, old-fashioned stories about family duty, quiet courage and love that waits, and who enjoy a good scheme, a brave small animal and a village mystery.

A practical woman holds a failing house together
The story opens in a garden, and the garden tells you who Frances is. She is twenty-eight and runs the house, the fields and the servants. Most of all, she runs her father.
Squire Kane comes from an old family that was once rich. Now nearly all his land is mortgaged. Yet he never spends a shilling without her advice.
When he learns that little Fluff is coming to live at the Firs, he is delighted. He tells Frances she was never young. She frowns with pain, then asks if the girl's father will pay for her keep. He calls her cold, though her goodness is unnoticed work, taken for granted by the one person who gains most from it.
Those who quietly carry a household are seldom thanked until they are gone.
