De vijf kleine Peppers op school in short

At its heart, this book is about growing up under a mother's steady eye. Joel and David leave the Pepper household for Dr. Marks's school, and Polly stays in the King mansion, but the same rules go with them.

What De vijf kleine Peppers op school is about

Joel Pepper wants his new tennis racket back, and a boy named Jenkins has hidden it in a housemaid's closet. Before the week is out, Joel is in a bloody fight, then in a midnight brawl in a pine grove, then halfway up a lightning rod with the school matron staring down at him. What would you do with a temper like his and a mother's rules ringing in your ears?

Five Little Peppers at School is by Margaret Sidney, who wrote the Peppers' family books. Here she follows Joel and David at Dr. Marks's boys' school, while Polly and little Phronsie live their own adventures at home in Grandpapa King's big house. Underneath it all runs one steady question. How do you stay honest and kind when it would be easier not to be?

Voor wie is het?. You will love this book if you enjoy warm family stories, school pranks and loyal friendships. It suits anyone who likes a cheerful voice and a big, kind household.

A stolen racket starts the trouble

The story opens at Dr. Marks's boys' school, where Joel Pepper is called to class just as a boy named Jenkins slips into his room. Jenkins wants revenge for the beating Joel gave him the term before. He hunts for the new racket that Grandpapa King has sent, because a big match is set for two o'clock that afternoon.

Tom Beresford, a tall boy who finds the whole business funny, spots the racket under a bed. Then another boy comes charging down the hall, and Jenkins shoves it into a housemaid's closet under some cleaning cloths. Joel comes back, finds the racket gone, and rolls up his sleeves. The fight is hardly begun when the matron, Mrs. Fox, is heard on the stairs. Everyone scatters, and Joel is left with a bloody nose and a torn sleeve.

Then comes the first surprise. Tom whispers to Joel that he will tell where the racket is, because keeping quiet would be too mean. Joel finds it, hugs it, and goes out to the court. He plays badly in the first set, then finds his stroke and wins the match with a brilliant last set. He insists the crowd carry his partner Fred Ricketson too.

The chapter shows a boy quick with his fists and just as quick to share the credit. A single honest choice can change what a day turns into.
