Ethics, Propositions I: samenvatting
Propositions I van 17 · 42 min om chapter te lezen
In Propositions I, the argument establishes that substance exists necessarily, is infinite and indivisible, and admits no other substance besides God. It then places everything within God and defines divine freedom as action arising from God’s own nature, rather than a choice to withhold what necessarily follows from that nature.
Wat er gebeurt
- Substance precedes its modifications, and substances sharing an attribute cannot be distinct.
- Substance has no external producer, so existence belongs to its nature and it is necessarily infinite.
- The argument establishes God’s necessary existence and rejects the division of substance into independent parts.
- God is the only substance, and everything exists and is understood through God.
- The discussion distinguishes imagined divisions of quantity from the indivisible extended substance understood through intellect.
- Everything follows necessarily from divine nature, making God unconstrained and free without making divine action optional.
