Eliza in short
Eliza is a set of linked sketches in the voice of a clerk who is sure he is wise, tasteful and in charge. Over many small scenes, he buys cards nobody needs, courts the favour of titles, tests bad port on the household and kicks a hat that is not his. Each time Eliza sees the real situation, while he writes it up as a success.
What Eliza is about
Would you trust a man who calls himself many-sided, yet cannot find his keys because they sit in his own pocket? That is the husband who tells every scene in Eliza. He is a clerk in a London firm, he lives in a small suburban house, and he is certain that he has taste, judgment and a firm hand at home.
Eliza is a book of short comic sketches by Barry Pain, an English writer who died in 1928. The husband offers the little events of his married life as proof that a man on a small income can keep his respectability and manage his wife. The fun lies in the gap between what he says and what you see, while Eliza answers him in a few dry words.
Voor wie is het?. You will enjoy this if you like gentle domestic comedy, a narrator who fools himself, and sharp little dialogues between husband and wife.

A husband paints his own flattering portrait
The book opens with the husband wondering whether anyone can describe himself. A junior clerk once offered to do it in two words, and they were so rude that the talk ended. He decides that very few people see themselves accurately, and that he makes a regular study of himself on the train.
He calls himself many-sided and gives his proof. Taste first. When the household chose kitchen towels, he ordered the ones with a red border, though they cost threepence more per dozen. Eliza changed them the next day. Then comes respectability. He lists the failings of his neighbours, from washing hung in front gardens to ladies who fetch the milk in dressing gowns.
He also describes the life he would lead with money. There would be two servants, a cake kept ready for visitors and evening shoes carried to the theatre in a crewel-work bag. Eliza is a woman of high principles, he says, though she once filled the coal cellar at summer prices. He puts her lost playfulness down to living with a thoughtful man. Eliza says it is the work.
A man who explains his own virtues so carefully has handed you every clue to his faults.

- Eliza's mother A lonely, generous old lady who sends gifts and cancels debts, and whom the husband both counts on and resents.
- Miss Sakers The vicar's daughter, a pleasant visitor of higher social standing who is past her youth, gathers donations for the bazaar and lends novels.

- Mr. Pagram A colleague and neighbour, long estranged over a borrowed item, whose family is in need when a baby is born.
- Mr. Bagshaw The senior partner of the husband's firm, a big, fat man who speaks in short sentences and sends for him one morning.
How it ends (spoiler)
The final sketch, Promotion, is added while the book is at the printers. After a bad-tempered breakfast over airing and burned bacon, the husband is called to the senior partner, Mr. Bagshaw. The head clerk, Figgis, has been dismissed for selling the firm's secrets. The husband is given his post, with seventy-five pounds more now and another seventy-five after a year if his work is satisfactory. He buys champagne, tongue and pears, and he and Eliza plan how to spend the money sensibly. It is about the happiest evening of his life.

Vragen over Eliza
What is Eliza by Barry Pain about?
It is a set of short comic sketches about a suburban clerk and his wife Eliza. The husband tells each episode himself, and the humour lies in how his flattering account differs from what clearly happened.
Who tells the story in Eliza?
The husband tells it, though he is never named. He writes to the reader about his taste, respectability and handling of his wife, and he is always certain he has been right.
Is Eliza a novel or a collection of stories?
It is a collection of short sketches linked by the same couple, their friends and their small house. Each piece stands on its own, so you can read them in short sittings, and together they build one portrait of a marriage.
What does Eliza's mother do in the book?
She is a generous old lady whom the husband usually sends Eliza to visit for a day in early December. She sends gifts, postal orders and presents, and forgives debts, which the husband accepts while grumbling that her generosity is a reminder.
Is Eliza worth reading today?
Yes for anyone who likes comedy about money worries, pride and marriage. The scenes are brief, the dialogue is lively, and the husband's blindness to his own faults is recognisable in any age.
