De saga van Eirik de Rode in short
The saga moves from one family and one coast to the next. Then Karlsefni marries Gudrid and leads a large company to Vinland, where the land is rich but the strangers on it are not easily overcome. You keep a picture of how real people might have crossed an ocean.
What De saga van Eirik de Rode is about
What would you do if the law drove you out of your home country, then out of your second one, and the only road left ran west into open ocean? That is the position of Eirik the Red, a man with a hot temper and a list of killings behind him.
Eirik the Red's Saga follows the first families of Greenland, then those who push on to a richer coast called Vinland.
Voor wie is het?. This book suits readers who love Viking voyages, family feuds and old Norse customs. If you are curious how Greenland was settled, its vivid scenes will hold you.

A feuding exile names a land Greenland
The saga opens with family history. Aud the Deep-minded loses her husband Olaf the White and then her son Thorstein the Red, who is killed by the Scots. She has a ship built in secret in the woods and sails to Iceland with twenty free men aboard.
She claims the whole Dale country and raises crosses on a hill, because she is a Christian. She frees a man named Vifil and gives him a dale of his own.
Then the story turns to Eirik. His father moves the family from Norway to Iceland because of killings. Eirik marries Thjodhild and settles at Haukadale. His servants cause a landslide on a neighbor's land, a kinsman kills them, and Eirik kills in return. He is banished from the district.
He lends a man named Thorgest some pillars and cannot get them back. He takes them by force, and two of Thorgest's sons die in the fight. At the Thorsnes assembly Eirik is outlawed.
He decides to look for the land Gunnbjorn once sighted when a gale blew him far west. After three summers exploring the coasts, he returns to Iceland and makes peace. He calls the new country Greenland, because settlers will come more readily to a land with an attractive name.
Exile can be the start of a new world, and a name can draw people to a place.

Vragen over De saga van Eirik de Rode
What is Eirik the Red's Saga about?
It tells how Eirik the Red, outlawed from Iceland, settles in Greenland, and how Thorfinn Karlsefni later leads an expedition, accompanied by Gudrid, to explore a rich land called Vinland.
Who is Gudrid in the saga?
Gudrid is Thorbjorn's daughter, admired for her beauty and character. A seeress foretells her fate in Greenland, and she marries twice, first Eirik's son Thorstein and then Thorfinn Karlsefni, who leads the Vinland expedition.
Why did Eirik call it Greenland?
The saga says Eirik chose the name because people would be more eager to go there if the land had a good name. It was a way of drawing settlers to a new colony.
Is Eirik the Red's Saga a true story?
It is a medieval Icelandic saga written down long after the events, and it mixes remembered history with legend. Eirik, Leif and the Greenland settlement are historical figures and places, while ghosts and one-footed men belong to the storyteller's world.
Is Eirik the Red's Saga easy to read?
Yes, in its approachable form. Short chapters, a plain storytelling voice and vivid scenes such as the seeress's visit, the Yule feast and the market with red cloth make it easy to follow from start to finish.
