Who Abraham Van Helsing is
Abraham Van Helsing arrives from Amsterdam after Dr John Seward asks him to examine Lucy's unexplained illness. He is learned in several fields, yet his manner is gentle, humorous and sometimes openly emotional. His formal English and puzzling questions conceal a mind alert to dangers that others do not recognise.
What Abraham Van Helsing wants
Van Helsing wants to save Lucy, whose weakness and loss of blood leave Seward without a clear explanation. He asks others to give blood and places garlic flowers in her room as protection. His care joins medical treatment with old knowledge, asking his companions to consider facts outside their usual understanding.
Abraham Van Helsing and the others in the story
Seward turns to his former teacher because he trusts his learning, but Van Helsing does not explain everything at once. This secrecy leaves Seward puzzled and frustrated as the two doctors take turns watching over Lucy. Their relationship brings the novel's meeting of science and old belief into a personal struggle over trust.
