Liefde is noodlottig in short

Doomed Love tells how two young people in northern Portugal try to love each other against their fathers, a cousin and the law. Simão is a brave, proud student, and Thereza is a stubborn heiress who writes her faith in letters. Around them, the farrier João da Cruz and his daughter Marianna give help that costs them more than anyone knows.

What Liefde is noodlottig is about

What would you do if your father, your cousin and a convent all stood between you and the person you love? Doomed Love opens with that kind of trap, and with a cold fact. Camilo Castelo Branco says he was reading old registers in the Porto Court prison, where he himself sat in 1861, when he found an entry for a student of eighteen named Simão Antonio Botelho.

The margin says he was sent to India in 1807. From that one line the author builds a novel of love and provincial pride, told by a narrator who jokes, scolds and rages at men who kill for honor. The trouble starts in the parents' house.

Voor wie is het?. Readers who enjoy passionate romance, an opinionated storyteller and sharp humor about family pride will love this novel. It also suits those drawn to stories of honor and loyal friends.

    A flute-playing judge marries a court lady

The story starts with the parents, not the lovers. Domingos José Correia Botelho is a nobleman from Vila Real. He is extremely ugly and not at all quick. His great gift is the flute, and he wins royal favor and marries a court lady, Dona Rita Preciosa.

Rita never forgives him for taking her away from the palace. When he is posted home as a magistrate, the local nobility meet the couple with old sedan chairs. Rita studies the procession through a gold lorgnette and asks what century the mountain lives in. The husband is jealous and unsure, and the wife looks down on everyone.

Their second son, Simão, is born in 1784. He has the fierce temper of a great-grandfather. His father praises it, and his mother cannot warm to him. Before he ever meets Thereza, he has learned that love at home depends on rank and obedience.

Simão's pride and his family's cold pride are born in the same house.
