Deerfoot in de bergen in short

Deerfoot in the Mountains follows a single road home. A party reaches the Pacific, turns back, and loses a horse. Deerfoot follows the trail on foot, takes the stallion back in a night raid, survives a fall in a canyon, and crosses the Rockies with a stranger's help.

What Deerfoot in de bergen is about

What would you do if your closest friend were a black stallion, and he vanished while you were away? Deerfoot walks into the mountains alone, in the cold edge of winter, and does not stop until he has found him.

Deerfoot in the Mountains was written by Edward Sylvester Ellis, a prolific author of adventure tales for young readers. It follows Deerfoot, a young Shawanoe warrior and devout Christian, with his friends George and Victor Shelton and the Blackfoot guide Mul-tal-la, as they turn home from the Pacific coast in 1804 and 1805. You get a fast run of scenes and one question beneath them: how does a man who fears nothing use his strength?

Voor wie is het?. You will enjoy this book if you like frontier adventure, loyal friendships, and a hero who wins with skill and mercy. It suits readers fond of horse stories.

    Principle comes before comfort

The story opens on the Pacific slope near the Columbia River. Deerfoot, Mul-tal-la, and the twin brothers George and Victor have finished the journey from the Ohio. Deerfoot speaks quietly of the day when settlers will spread like leaves across the land, and he hopes the red and white peoples will live in peace.

The party turns upstream. One cold night, a pile of lumber lies beside their camp, and the boys long to burn some of it. Deerfoot reminds them that the wood belongs to someone else, so taking it would be a sin. It is better to freeze than to steal.

Morning brings snow and a burst of fun. Victor tries to surprise his sleeping friends with snowballs. Deerfoot wakes with one in his face and fires back with deadly aim, and soon all three beg for mercy. He is strict with himself, yet warm and playful with those he loves.

A hero shows his principles most clearly when nobody is watching.
