Neef Pons in short
Cousin Pons tells how a gentle, ugly, talented man is pushed out of the only world he knows. Pons lives on small errands and good dinners, until one insult at the President's house sends him home to Schmucke. Then the matchmaking he arranges for his cousins goes wrong, and the family turns on him.
What Neef Pons is about
What would you do if your only way to a warm dinner was to run errands for people who laugh at you behind your back? In October 1844, a man of about sixty walks the Boulevard des Italiens in a nut-brown spencer, a coat cut in the fashion of 1806, and a battered hat. Passersby smile at him, then fall quiet, because his ugly face carries a deep sadness.
This is Sylvain Pons, once a prize-winning composer and now a theater conductor. Cousin Pons was written by Honoré de Balzac in the 1840s as part of his cycle of Parisian stories, the Human Comedy. You meet a gentle collector, a gentler German friend, and a ring of relatives, servants, and dealers who circle them. The first thing to understand is Pons himself.
Voor wie is het?. You will love this book if you enjoy vivid portraits of nineteenth-century Paris, stories of friendship and betrayal, and sharp comic villains who show what money does to ordinary people.

A shabby collector walks Paris with a treasure
Balzac opens with a portrait before he gives a plot. The old man in the spencer is Sylvain Pons, and everything about him is out of date, from his gaiters to his huge white cravat. His face is ugly, with a great nose and gray eyes rimmed in red.
Pons once won the prize that sent him to Rome to study music. There he found a second love, which was old art. He never pays more than a hundred francs for anything, and he buys only what he knows is worth far more. Over forty years he gathers a catalog of 1907 pieces, and he keeps them hidden, because they exist for his own joy.
The object under his coat today is a fan painted by Watteau, picked up from a dealer for almost nothing. He means to give it to his cousin, the wife of a Paris judge, and he hopes the gift will pay for his dinners. A passion can be a person's treasure and his weak spot at once.

Characters, plot and themes
Main characters
- Sylvain Pons An ugly, kindly old musician and collector of art who wants only a warm dinner, a little respect, and the company of people who value him.
- Wilhelm Schmucke Pons's German friend and fellow musician, a childlike dreamer who wants nothing but to keep his friend close and happy.
- Madame Cibot The concierge and housekeeper, a strong, talkative former oyster seller who longs for a legacy and grows hungrier as she learns what the collection is worth.
- Madame Camusot de Marville The judge's wife, proud and ruthless, who wants a rich husband for her daughter and holds a grudge against the poor cousin.
- Remonencq An Auvergne dealer in scrap and antiques who dreams of a grand shop on a boulevard and will do almost anything to get the money for it.
- Fraisier A poor, sharp lawyer with a skin disease and big dreams who wants to become a justice of the peace by serving the family.
- Doctor Poulain A neighborhood doctor, poor and stuck in a small practice, who wants a rich patient and a post at a hospital.
- Elie Magus A wealthy old dealer who lives like a miser among his paintings and longs to own the finest pieces in Pons's collection.
How it ends (spoiler)
Pons learns that Madame Cibot has been robbing him, makes a will in favor of Schmucke, and then dies in the Rue de Normandie. Schmucke is pushed out of the apartment, and Fraisier and the Camusot family fight the will. Gaudissart tricks the grieving German into a settlement, and when Schmucke reads the accusations in a legal summons, he collapses and dies ten days later. The family takes the collection. Fraisier becomes a justice of the peace, and Remonencq dies by his own poison.

Vragen over Neef Pons
What is Cousin Pons about?
It follows Sylvain Pons, a poor Paris musician and art collector, who loses his dinner invitations after a family quarrel. Greedy neighbors, dealers, and lawyers then circle his hidden collection while his one loyal friend tries to protect him.
Who is Schmucke in Cousin Pons?
Wilhelm Schmucke is Pons's German friend, a pianist and music teacher who shares his apartment. He is innocent, gentle, and loyal, and he knows nothing about art or money, which makes him the person the schemers hope to deceive.
When was Cousin Pons written and is it a true story?
Balzac wrote it in the 1840s as part of his Human Comedy cycle. It is fiction, but it draws on real Paris life, including fashions, prices, doctors, and the fashion for collecting antiques.
Is Cousin Pons a companion to Cousin Bette?
Yes. Balzac called the two books twin stories about poor relations. Each shows a relative who is ill treated by a wealthy family, and both explore how character and money shape a person's fate.
What is the main message of Cousin Pons?
The book shows how greed and social ambition can turn ordinary people against an innocent man. It also values friendship, taste, and kindness, which the rich and powerful in the story fail to honor.
