The book follows the fall of royal authority and the scramble for power that follows. The court moves east, and the great states take over. What you keep is a set of patterns.

What Kronieken van de Oostelijke Zhou-koninkrijken is about

What happens when a king hears a children's song in the street and believes every word? In Chronicles of the Eastern Zhou Kingdoms, King Xuan of Zhou hears a rhyme about a mulberry bow and a reed quiver, and he decides his dynasty will fall. He punishes the wrong people, and the danger he fears gathers strength anyway.

Feng Menglong shaped this historical novel from the records of the centuries after the Zhou court moved east. It follows kings, dukes, ministers, generals and unforgettable women through plots, wars and betrayals. The book asks one question again and again: what makes a ruler last?

Voor wie is het?. Readers who enjoy court intrigue, clever generals, loyal ministers and dynastic upheaval will love this epic. It suits anyone curious about ancient China and tales where an omen or banquet alters a kingdom's fate.

The story in 10 parts

    A children's rhyme sets a king's fear loose

The book opens in the reign of King Xuan of Zhou, who has restored the dynasty with help from able ministers. Back in Haojing, he finds children clapping and singing that a bow of mulberry wood and a quiver of rushes will bring Zhou to an end. He seizes two of them, and the older says a child in red taught the song.

The Grand Historian Boyangfu says the child in red is the planet Mars, sent by Heaven, and that a setting sun with a rising moon points to a woman taking power. Then Queen Jiang brings strange news. An old palace woman has given birth to a girl, and the baby was thrown into the Qingshui River. The old woman says dragon saliva, stored since the last years of the Xia dynasty, became a small black turtle and entered her body.

The king bans bows and quivers and sends searchers after the child. A village woman carrying quivers is caught and executed. Her husband flees, and by the river he finds a baby wrapped in a straw mat. He carries her to the state of Bao, while the king believes the danger is gone.

A ruler who answers a warning with panic instead of reform only helps it come true.
