Carmilla in short

Carmilla is the story of a girl who gets the friend she has longed for and pays a price she cannot see. Laura takes in a guest left by a hurried mother. The guest looks like the face from Laura's childhood nightmare, charms the household and keeps her secrets close.

What Carmilla is about

What would you do if the face you feared in a childhood nightmare walked into your home as a guest? That is the question behind Carmilla, a short Gothic novella by the Irish writer Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. It first appeared in the 1870s, a generation before Dracula, and it sets its dread in a quiet Styrian castle.

Laura is nineteen and lonely, and she lives with her English father in a forest schloss, the German word for a castle. She writes years later. When a carriage overturns outside her gate and leaves a beautiful stranger in her care, she believes her wish for company has come true. The ending is left for the book itself.

Voor wie is het?. You will love this if you enjoy candlelit Gothic atmosphere, forest castles, moonlit walks, intense friendships with a hint of danger, and short classics that build dread through suggestion.

A lonely castle where visitors are rare

The tale opens in Styria, a region of forests and hills. Laura lives in a schloss with a drawbridge that has never been raised, a moat full of swans and a small chapel. Her father is English, a retired soldier, and a kind man who lets his daughter have her own way.

The household is tiny. It holds Laura, her father and two governesses. The nearest village lies seven miles away. Laura admits plainly that her life is lonely. Three miles to the west stands a ruined village with a roofless church. In it lie the crumbling tombs of the Karnstein family, now extinct.

Then Laura shares the memory that first marked her. At about six years old she wakes alone in the nursery and sees a solemn, pretty young lady kneeling by her bed. The lady soothes her and lies down beside her. Laura wakes to a stab in her chest, like two needles, and sees the lady slip beneath the bed. The servants find no mark.

A quiet, cut-off home, where one old fright is never forgotten, is the stage for the whole story.

The General tells how his own ward died after a guest named Millarca stayed with them, and Laura realizes that Carmilla is the same person. In the ruined Karnstein chapel, the tomb of Countess Mircalla is found, and her grave is opened during formal legal proceedings. She is a vampire, and she is staked, beheaded and burned. Laura recovers, travels to Italy with her father, and remains haunted by the memory of Carmilla years after the events.

Vragen over Carmilla

What is Carmilla about?

It follows Laura, a young woman in a remote Styrian castle, who befriends a mysterious guest named Carmilla after a carriage accident. As strange dreams, illness and local deaths mount, Laura's friendship becomes a source of fear.

Was Carmilla written before Dracula?

Yes. Le Fanu's novella appeared in the 1870s, roughly twenty years before Bram Stoker's Dracula was published. It is often cited as an influence on later vampire fiction, particularly on its atmosphere and its focus on a female vampire.

Who is the narrator of Carmilla?

The narrator is Laura, who writes years after the events. She is nineteen when the story takes place, and a short editorial introduction presents her account among papers connected with Doctor Hesselius.

Is Carmilla hard to read?

It is approachable. The novella is short, divided into brief chapters, and told in a direct first-person voice. Its vivid scenes, such as the carriage crash and the vanished guest, keep the story moving from one episode to the next.

What does the Karnstein portrait mean?

The old portrait of Mircalla, Countess Karnstein, dated 1698, looks exactly like Carmilla, even down to a mole on the throat. It links the guest to the ruined family nearby and raises questions that the rest of the book answers.
